Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and It’s Relevence to the Street

There are many different reasons for training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or any type of martial arts–whether it’s for fitness, confidence, self-defense, competition or self-expression; each individual starts for his or her own reason.  Whatever it may be the motivates you to practice martial arts; I believe that deep down inside, everybody would like to feel that they could defend themselves if they had to.  Self-defense is one of the deepest roots and traditions of martial arts.

So, how could practicing an art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where no strikes are involved, teach you how to defend yourself in a situation where there are no rules?
The benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, lie in the nature of the training and the aliveness of the art.  A skilled practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, is used to feeling the pressure of an opponent, comfortable in physically stressful situations and can manipulate somebody else’s energy.

The sheer adrenaline and stress of a street altercation can be very shocking to your system as you undergo the “fight or flight” response.   I belive that after training and understanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, you will be able to maintain your composure and quick thinking in the high stress situation of a street fight, because it sharpens the body and the mind a very unique way.

Balancing Life with Martial Arts Training/@DWMMA

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” Winston Churchill

When you start training in martial arts such as: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu or Mixed Martial Arts/MMA; two very important things are commitment and dedication. You have to be committed to putting the time in to earn your black belt, and stay dedicated to your training week after week.
With the hectic pace of life today, many practitioners run into problems when “life gets in the way”. In order to reap the most benefits from your training, one must have balance of the responsibilities of everyday life and a healthy training regimen.
When day-to-day affairs feel overwhelming; remember that your martial arts training is very important because it gives you the strength to deal with your problems and also alleviates the stress and tension created from life.  So, when life seems too busy, the last thing you want to do is let your training go wayside.

Warrior: A Glimpse into Mixed Martial Arts

A movie about two brothers who haven’t seen each other for years, the younger not speaking to the elder and both estranged from their father, who both wind up competing out of financial necessity in the same world-wide mixed martial arts worldwide championship?  How serendipitous!  The premise of the movie Warrior seems to be a guarantee of cliché melodrama you would expect from an underdog fighter film; however, for those who have no clue what Mixed Martial Arts(Salem Mass) entails, this movie could suffice for some MMA edification.

They not only act the parts, they enact the physicality of the roles.  As Mixed Martial Arts fighters they have to be in top shape and they are.  The fight scenes are brief but authentic looking.  This movie really entails what martial arts is about.  You really have a lot of respect for people who compete as Mixed Martial Artists.

Warrior: Mixed Martial Arts Salem Mass

Warrior: MMA Mixed Martial Arts

The movie, Warrior, is about two brothers facing the fight of a lifetime – and the wreckage of their broken family – within the high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighting.

Tommy Riordan, an ex-Marine haunted by a tragic past, returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh.   He enlists his father, a recovered alcoholic and his former coach, to train him for an MMA/Mixed Martial Arts, tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport.  As Tommy blazes a fierce path towards the title prize–his brother, Brendan, a former MMA/Mixed Martial Arts fighter, who is unable to make ends meet as a public school teacher, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family.
Even though years have passed, recriminations and past betrayals keep Brendan bitterly estranged from both Tommy and his father. But when Brendan’s unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Defend Against a Knife Attack With Filipino Jiu-Jitsu

I was reading the Salem Evening News about a local police officer in Danvers, Mass.  was stabbed several times in the arms and neck by an attacker while he was on Duty.  The worrisome fact about knife attacks is they come from nowhere–with little or no warning. The reality of it is that having defense skills against knife attacks could be the difference between a minor encounter or a more grim scenario.  Here are some facts about knife attacks and what you can do if you ever encounter one:

You DO NOT need a permit to carry a knife:  In most states, you need a permit just to carry pepper spray but you don’t need one to carry a knife.  So the chances of an attack with a knife is a lot higher than any other weapon.

If someone is waiving a knife in your face, it’s usually just to scare you into giving them what they want.  If the person is serious about the attack you will not know it is coming and the best way to be able to defend against that is to be aware of the defense techniques that go along with a knife attack.

If there is a way out–RUN.  In fact, the worst thing would be to try to engage in conflict.  If you can’t run, or if there isn’t an escape route– learn the correct defense tactics to protect you or your family.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA; our Filipino Jiu-Jitsu program will show you ways to evade a serious attack.  So that if you were to ever come ina situation where you are being threatened by someone with a knife or if someone comes at you with a knife, you will have the knowledge to survive.

Rare Fighting Styles Within Filipino Jiu-Jitsu: Eskrima/Arnis/Kali

Learning a martial art can be an effective way to stay in shape and relieve stress and pent-up aggression, all while learning self-defense.  Commonly known styles we have: Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Kickboxing.  There are a lot of “fighting styles” that are relatively unknown the our Western culture… one being Eskrima.

Eskrima (also known as Arnis and Kali) is a Filipino martial arts style that originated to train large numbers of Filipinos how to defend themselves against conquistadors, using little besides their bodies and sticks.  The techniques are usually easy to learn, but the style is complex enough that fighters must take many years to learn every nuance.  Although it is weapons based, it also includes striking (kicking and punching), wrestling and grappling, and even ground-fighting, as well as teaching practical defenses against most weapons.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA our Filipino Jiu-Jitsu program incorporates Filipino Martial Arts Concepts into a well-rounded self-defense system.  Filipino Jiu-Jitsu is not a new system or style, it is a modern approach towards practical street self-defense.  This unique fighting method combines the principles, concepts and techniques of Panantukan (Filipino “dirty” Boxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, silat, Muay Thai kickboxing, Combat Jujitsu and Filipino Eskrima/Kali/Arnis (Stick & knife fighting) to make it very modern approach towards practical street self-defense.

Filipino Jiu-Jitsu  is well suited for men, and women of all ages, because physical strength and athletic abilities are not essential. Only the core techniques have been taken from these combative arts and organized into an easy to learn curriculum that can benefit the beginner as well as the advanced practitioner. In addition to learning effective self-defense, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu also provides the student with the means to improve their physical fitness, awareness, flexibility and self-confidence. Combining the best of many styles into a blended system gives our students the advantage they need to protect themselves in virtually any situation.

Exploring Deeper in Martial Arts: Why Do We Bow? @DWMMA

For many, the martial arts are solely about the physical benefits — lose a few pounds, get a good workout, maybe learn a few self defense techniques… and why wouldn’t they?  Martial arts really is a great, fun way to stay in shape.  However,  if you are basing your training only on the fitness aspect and only come to class one or two times a week; you may be cheating yourself out of the mental, spiritual and cultural aspects of the martial arts.

Eventually, the more train,  you’ll realize that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ is more than just arm-locks, sweeps and rolling; Thai kickboxing is more that hitting pads and working up a sweat and Filipino Jiu-Jitsu is more than knives, sticks and angles.  Over time, the little things will start to take on new meaning — why is there a Brazilian flag hanging in the front of the class? Why do we wear colored belts and why is it so great when I move up in belt rank? Why do we wear a gi in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, but not in Filipino Jiu-Jitsu?  We’ll do a future post on the importance of asking questions in the martial arts, but for now let’s start with one of the most fundamental elements of martial arts culture:  Why do we bow?

Each class and each technique starts with a universal bow — from time to time, you’ll hear the instructor remind you to “pay your respects.”  What does that really mean?  The bow reminds us to respect the learning process, to notice and enjoy the ups and downs.  It reminds us to respect your classmates who are entrusting you not to injure them when you practice together, it reminds you that they are your teacher when they know more than you, and you are theirs when they know less. The reminds us that there is more to martial arts than just the physical benefits… if you seek it.  The bow reminds us to respect the art itself for the complete benefits it can bestow on you as a student — strengthening the body, calming the mind and awakening the spirit.

DWMMA Student Makes Local Paper For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ

Dragon Within student Klug earns grappling honor

By Jean DePlacido correspondent

John Klug had always been interested in Mixed Martial Arts/MMA, but he had no training at all when he joined Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts in Salem last March. The 16-year old athlete from Lynnfield was a very quick learner, and he especially loved Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Klug made up his mind to compete in the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) event in Hartford, Conn., on July 30. NAGA is one of the largest BJJ Ground Fighting competitions in the Northeast, and with less than four months experience under his belt he placed second in both Gi and No Gi.

“Gi is a loosely fitted two piece garment held together with a cloth belt,” said Klug, who plays wide receiver and cornerback on the Lynnfield High football team. “No Gi is very different because you compete in athletic shorts and a tee-shirt. There is a huge difference because in Gi you and your opponent can grab onto the lapel of the Gi and the pants, giving more leverage. In No Gi there is nothing to hold onto so it is much harder.”

Klug proved to be a master of both styles at the NAGA event.

“Ever since I was very young the sport has interested me, and I’ve fallen in love with grappling. I’ve always played basketball, but I’m thinking of switching to wrestling this year,” he said. “I think I picked up the skills you need in MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)  quickly because (Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts) has the best instructors around.”

Klug is getting ready for his next competition, another NAGA event in Lincoln, Rhode Island on October 15. His goal is to take first place in both Gi and No Gi this time. He sets the bar very high, but has the results to back it up.

Patricia Cregier, wife of Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts owner Dennis Cregier, said Klug is one of several talented teenagers they are working with. She has seen their confidence built through martial arts.

“John is an excellent example of how a teenager should be,” said DWMMA owner and head instructor Dennis Cregier. “He shows dedication to being part of Dragon Within, and has extraordinary natural talents in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

BJJ is a complex martial art, and the fact that at 16 with only a few months training he came in second in both Gi and No Gi shows what kind of talent he has. He’s also a good kid, and I am glad to be able to help him learn martial arts, especially since he shows so much potential.”

MMA/Mixed Martial Arts Fitness and Diet Tips/@DWMMA

Ever wonder how the MMA/Mixed Martial Arts Fighters on UFC (ultimate fighting championship) stay fit and make-weight for their matches?  The fact that martial arts isn’t just for people looking for martial arts training.  It’s a good way to lose weight and stay fit.  Our programs at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, will give you the cardio, calisthenics, weight lifting, circuit training and MMA/mixed martial arts training you need to stay fit.  The exercises you do in these programs are often the same ones that Jorge Rivera, Georges St. Pierre or Brock Lesnar do to keep in shape.

Along with keeping physically active with martial arts training, you should really look at some habits you may have in regards to diet and try to improve on them with these 5 tips:

Diet Tweak #1: Don’t eat after 6pm
This is such a simple and effective way to lose fat. Late night eating is the most damaging to your waistline, so cut it out completely.

  • Brush your teeth immediately following dinner. Once your teeth are brushed, you’ve put a period to the end of your consumption for the day.
  • Change your evening routine. If you’ve always ended your day watching your favorite shows with your hand in the snack bowl, then now is the time to change things up. Find activities that don’t revolve around food and stick with those.
  • Make it a habit. The first few weeks will be the hardest, but soon your new no-food-after-6pm routine will feel normal.

Diet Tweak #2: Cut back on carbs
Notice I didn’t say to cut out all carbs, but rather to cut back on carbs. These diet tweaks are meant as lifestyle changes that you stick with long-term. Cutting back on carbs is a realistic and very effective way to lose weight.

  • Always choose whole grain bread and pasta over white. Whole grains are less likely to be stored as fat than processed grains.
  • Eat half of the carbs you normally do. Eat your sandwich open-faced and reduce the size of your pasta serving.
  • Avoid carb-filled snacks between meals. Instead of crackers or chips, have fresh fruit and veggies.

Diet Tweak #3: Eat more fiber
Most people simply do not get enough fiber in their diets. Fiber is essential when it comes to getting lean since it is low-calorie while filling you up.

  • Instead of seeing salad just as a side item, make salads into meals. Add protein to a large pile of greens for a guiltless meal. *Try the recipe for Grilled Salmon and Peach Salad below.
  • Make veggies a part of every meal. The benefits of eating more vegetables are too numerous to list, just know that your body will become healthier and leaner with each fibrous bite.
  • Fruits are a delicious source of fiber. Incorporate fresh, seasonal fruits into your daily diet.

Diet Tweak #4: Drink tons of water
Drinking plenty of water is another extremely simple way to promote weight loss. Chronic dehydration leads to false hunger signals and unnecessary calorie consumption.

  • Drink a large glass of water before each meal. This will prevent overeating.
  • Choose water instead of sugar-filled sodas and juices. Sugar-filled drinks are a huge weight-gain trap.
  • Carry a water bottle with you throughout your day. Keep water in the car and at your desk for constant hydration.

Diet Tweak #5: Enjoy natural sweets
Traditional sugar-filled sweets will quickly add up around your waistline. Instead of going for sugary sweets, enjoy natural sweets.

  • Fruit is nature’s candy. Reach for sweet, seasonal fruit for dessert.
  • Avoid foods that contain white sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Consider these items ‘anti-flat-abs’.
  • Use wholesome sweeteners such as pure maple syrup, brown rice syrup or dates in your recipes instead of white sugar. Eliminate white sugar from your kitchen.
*fact*  It’s OK to Cheat!!!

Does the thought of eating healthy everyday make your head spin?  Establish a weekly “Cheat Day” where you allow yourself a taste of all your favorite indulgences.   It’s OK to cheat once a week – just indulge with control, and stick with your clean eating habits on all other days.

Eating right, coupled with martial arts training such as: Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-JItsu/BJJ, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts/MMA and Burnout: Strength and Conditioning– will give you the tools for a toned, lean body.

Bridging the Gap in Martial Arts training: When Absenses effect your performance/@DWMMA

To progress in Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, or Mixed Martial Arts/MMA, you really should strive to make two to three classes per week.  But with work, school, family and travel… sometimes it’s really hard to get to the gym.  While there is no real substitute for class time, there are a few things you can do to keep your skills sharp if you know you are going to be out for a few days:

1. Shadow boxing — there is an old saying in boxing, “the mirror is your best instructor.” Wherever you are, you can probably find a little space to get in a couple of rounds of shadow boxing.  Shadow boxing is a great way to put together your combinations — work the four counts, the 15 count and the boxing feed.  How’s the jab — crisp?  Are you dropping your hand after the cross?  How’s the footwork? Head movement?  Are you working defense… parries, covers, slipping? You can use a kitchen timer or download a timer app for your phone.

2. Cardio — Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ require strong cardio; if you are going to be out for a couple of days, you don’t want to be sucking wind when you come back.  A jump rope is an inexpensive and easy way to keep fit at home or when traveling. You can also do the exercises that we do in the Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ warm-ups or the stuff we do in the Strength and Conditioning class pretty much anywhere: front-to-back jumping jacks, skip knees, burpies, squat, skip kicks, push-ups, etc — you’ll be working up a sweat in no time.

3. Stretching — It always a good idea to try to remain flexible and limber in your off days, but if you have done a couple of rounds of shadowboxing and a home cardio circuit, remember it’s important to warm-up and stretch like you would if you were at the gym to avoid injuries.

4. Road work — All of the fighters and many of the martial artists in the gym have added running to their workout regimes to build up their cardio and endurance.  With a pair of running shorts and shoes, you can hit the road almost anywhere. This is a great way to cross-train on your off days or to stay in shape when you are out of the gym

Again, the only way to learn martial arts is to come to class… sorry, there’s no shortcut. However, sometimes absences are unavoidable; the best thing you can do is  lessen the impact. If you have other ways you like to cross-train, let’s hear ‘em — leave a comment to this post.
