Martial Arts Woes: When you Hit Plateau in Training/@DWMMA

Hit a Plateau?  Five things you can do today to take your martial arts training to the next level.

When you first start training in the martial arts, you may find that you pick up concepts and new techniques quickly; but after a few months, your progress may begin to slow.  Congratulations!  You’ve hit your first plateau.   Your natural inclination may be to get frustrated; some people even give up on the martial arts altogether. No need to get upset, and there is certainly no reason to give up — this plateau is a natural part of the learning process.

While frustrating, there are a couple of things that you can do speed your way through the process.

1. Mix up your days — if your regular days are Tuesday and Thursday, try Monday and Wednesday.  A change in routine may give you a slightly different perspective.  While all of the instructors teach the same curriculum, each explains things a bit differently, a different instructor may explain some of the concepts you are struggling with in a slightly different way.

2. Try a new class – you love the martial arts, but you are frustrated with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ... why not try a Thai kickboxing or Filipino Jiu-Jitsu class? Each of the arts that we teach at Dragon Within Martial Arts, Salem MA,  are designed to work together to make you a complete martial artist. Adding ground to your stand-up game or adding some stand-up to round out your ground skills will make you a better martial artist – concepts that you learn in one art can be applied and help you overcome challenges in another art

3. Take a private class – privates are a good way to deep dive on specific challenges and to focus on areas where you are struggling. To get the most out of your privates, try keeping notes or a journal on where you’ve been having problems — bring the journal with you when you meet with the instructor so you remember exactly what you want to cover.

4. Sign up for a evaluation to assess your progress – sometimes you might not be doing as badly as you think.  Something that seems like a major challenge might be a simple fix that can be addresses with some quick one-on-one instruction.

5. Compete in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ tournament – If you are enrolled in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program, you might want to think about entering into a tournament to test your skills on the mat. A number of the Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts student of all levels compete in local and regional tournaments such as NAGA. Tournaments are a great way to break out of routines and test your skills against new people that you’ve never rolled before.

Learning martial arts is a journey — Thai kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Filipino Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts/MMA, are not easy arts to master.  It takes hard work, perseverance, commitment, a positive attitude and the will to do what it takes to improve yourself both physically and mentally.  The ups and downs, the plateaus, are all part of the journey.  As you progress in the martial arts you’ll learn that like any great journey, its not about the destination; it’s about what you learn along the way.

Martial Arts Schools vs. Big Corporate Gyms/@DWMMA

Rachael Babineau

I know that I am guilty of the #1 reason why regular gyms don’t work for a lot of people.  I am not a self motivator.  I would find almost ANY excuse to slack-off on working out and if I did bother to go to the gym–I would workout for 20 minutes… get bored… and leave.  After a few months of the same old inefficient workout regime; I stopped going to the gym all together.  I know the deals of big gyms seem irresistible.  I mean $20 a month? Crazy!  The age-old question remains.  What kind of QUALITY workout do you think you are going to get by just walking to a place that happens to have workout equipment?  If you’re anything like the average person, you are going to workout for 20-30 minutes, get bored…and leave.

Motivation 101:  Don’t make excuses.  Take action.

This is why Martial Arts training is so great for the average person.  The instruction is great for people like me who NEED structure within their workout.  Knowing exactly what you should be doing is infinitely better than trying to use the machines and THINK you are doing it the right way in order to reap the full benefits of the workout.  Not everybody who joins is looking to be a world-class kickboxer, or a Heavyweight Champion…although there are some who aspire to be those and they are right along side of you inspiring you and motivating you to do the best you can.
The instruction is as close to having a personal trainer as you can get… you know… without dishing out a hundred bucks for an hour for it.  They don’t make you work as hard as you can, they motivate you to want to do your best.  To get it right.

Childhood obesity is a problem with a lot of children now a days and with school budgets being cut; athletic departments are not what they used to be.  Children who participate in our martial arts programs have fun while being physically active.  Doing martial arts gets them away from the TV/Computer/Video Games and into an environment where they are having fun while being active.

Cross Training vs Single Arts: Mixed Martial Arts Training/@DWMMA

Why cross train?  What are the benefits of cross training in different martial arts?  Success in modern martial arts lies in adapting many styles.  While each martial art has its attributes– it has its gaps as well.  By cross training in different arts, you fill yourself with more knowledge of different self-defense skills that make for a more well-rounded defense system.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, all of our programs compliment each other accordingly.  We offer Thai Kickboxing, which is a great stand up art where you learn how to successfully strike and defend yourself on your feet.  You learn the basic punches, knees, elbows and kicks.  It’s an effective art when it comes to standing up and understand the ranges of fighting.   However, there are no ground techniques.  If you need to be able to defend yourself in someone gets you to the ground, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) will fill in the gap of the “ground game” that Thai Kickboxing is missing.  Most fights will go to the ground, so understanding position controls and how to get back on your feet is very important.   Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, which is a great combination of Panatukan (filipino “dirty” boxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) and Filipino Stick and Knife defense tactics (Kali/Arnis/Eskrima).   Taking both Thai Kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), will help you get into more details on those elements of Filipino Jiu-Jitsu which will improve your self-defense skills immensely.

Cross training in different arts that compliment each other can be extremely beneficial to the practitioner by making your self-defense techniques more realistic and practical by filling the gaps that you encounter in each art.  This is why Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) is such an effective “fighting style”.  The definition of Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) isn’t the  training of particular martial arts, it’s a combination of many arts such as: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Western Boxing.  Our goal, at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, is to offer you the most realistic, and functional self-defense training around and with cross training in different martial arts, you will be confident that you will be able to defend yourself in virtually ANY situation.

UFC 133: What kind of Fight to expect from Main Fight Card/@DWMMA

UFC 133 is airing on PPV tomorrow, August 6th at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia PA.  The main event is going to be one to remember.  Former Light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans square off in what looks to be a good match.  Tito Ortiz is coming off a big win against Ryan Bader a few weeks ago at UFC 132.  After several back injuries and a devastating losing streak; what looked to be a diminishing career is starting to gain some sparks after that win.

While Ortiz is fresh off a win at UFC 132, Rashad Evans has had a long absence from the ring.  Will this have an impact on the fight?  Probably not.  Rashad “Suga” Evans only has one professional loss, against Lyoto Machada, holding 15(wins) 1(Loss) 1(Draw)– that draw being the last time Ortiz and Evans met at UFC 73.

You can expect a good ground fight from these two because wrestling is both of their strong points.  If Evans’ is smart, keeping it a stand-up for a while will prove beneficial since Ortiz’s strong point is definitely on the ground.  Both contenders are strong with wrestling; however, Evans has one-punch knock out power and clearly a speed advantage.

Both contenders have a good shot at winning– both have some handicaps against them.

So, who will win?

How Often Should You Train in Thai Kickboxing

Thai kickboxing is a unique and effective blend of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Western Boxing and American Kickboxing.  It has captured the interest of men and women alike.   While competitive kickboxers train almost everyday– it is recommended for the average kickboxing students train at least 2-3 times per week to full reap the benefits of taking such a physically active martial art.

Thai Kickboxing; along with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) and Filipino Jiu-Jitsu; offers a great workout for both your body and mind.  When doing any physically strenuous workout, repetition is key for the resilience in your muscles after each workout…not to mention the added health benefit of regular exercise.  Studies show that people who exercise on a regular basis lessen their risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, some cancers and depression.

Thai kickboxing is more than just a cardio program.  Although you get an amazing workout with kickboxing– it also is a great release of pent-up aggression and stress.  It improves your balance and help tone and sculpt your muscles that you neglect from regular workouts.

Alright, enough of the many HEALTH factors as to why you should train regularly.  We all know how important regular exercise is for your health.  Another BIG reason why you should come to at least 2-3 classes a week would be for the mental retention of the information given in class and vitality for the progression towards a black belt.  Although the classes vary in what’s being taught, the core training is there.  You will be able to work the pivots more concisely and get your technique down in your roundhouse kick.  You will be able to defend yourself competently and confidently.  One class a week just isn’t enough.

Mixed Martial Arts/MMA: UFC 133 Jorge Rivera vs Costantinos Philippou

T- 4 days until UFC 133 on August 6th at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.  UFC 133 is headlined by former light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans squaring off for the second time.

Check out Dragon Within Mixed Martial Art‘s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) mentor BJJ Black Belt Tim Burrill in the corner for UFC Middleweight, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera in his fight against Costantinos Philippou. Originally, the opponent for Jorge was Alessio Sakara but Sakara had to drop out due to a knee injury.  Castantinos (Casta), who was originally matched up with Rafael Natal on the UFC 133 undercard, will be stepping up to meet with Jorge.

The match-up between Rivera and Sakara is seemingly doomed since this will be the third match up attempt and third time scratched.   Either way,  whether its Sakara or Casta–Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts will be watching Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera use all the submissions and chokes and sweeps he taught us at the last Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ)/Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) workshop.

“The Knot”– The Journey of Martial Arts Progression

-Andrew Boyd

When you earn a new belt in Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), it feels great.  Many people will ask “when did you get your belt?”  The answer, of course, is not last Tuesday, or last Thursday, or any specific point in time… you earned that belt every second of every minute you spent on the mat since the moment you first put on that white belt.  Too often, as martial artists, we strive to learn cool new things and increasingly complicated techniques– sometimes, this means that we gloss over, ignore or even forget the stuff that we thought we already knew.  When you get that coveted belt promotion, the instructor will tie your old belt in a knot– this  signifies that you are “locking in the knowledge of everything that you’ve already learned” as a foundation for you to build upon as you continue on your journey to black belt.

Remember the Knot when you put on that bright, stiff, new belt around your waist.  As you progress in the martial arts, techniques that you know now will take on new meanings in the future.  You’ll find applications for old material.  As that new belt fades and gets nicely broken in; remind yourself to revisit the old curriculum– do you see anything new?  Is there anything that is unclear?  The evals are a great time to ask these questions.

Why Women Should Take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Women’s Self-Defense

Through my observations: it seems that most grappling classes are male dominant. It’s not that there are a lot of women coming in and getting turned off by something that surrounds our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes; it seems that women just aren’t aware of the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and not coming in to see exactly what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) really is about.  So that leads me to ask why aren’t there more women taking interest in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It can be a dangerous world for a woman and almost ALL RAPES happen being pinned to the ground by a bigger, stronger opponent. Wouldn’t you want to feel confident that if someone were to gain dominance over you on the ground, you would have the knowledge to possibly prevent the rape and save your life?

Women should take more interest in Martial Arts in general…not only for the self-defense aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, or Mixed Martial Arts(MMA), but for the empowerment of being a woman. It is definitely a confidence builder and who doesn’t want more confidence? It’s fun and active. It’s a great way to stay in shape and increase flexibility.  Taking martial arts or a group sport, in general, helps you meet new people with similar interest; however, the power of community among members at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, is incredible.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, we don’t just teach you a series of moves for self-defense. We instill within you the confidence, through self-defense, to know you are prepared to handle yourself in ANY situation.

Confidence Through Self-Defense

Confidence: the certainty in your ability to successfully achieve your goals and the resiliency to withstand the challenges along the way.

Everybody wants to feel confident some way or another. I find that confidence is one of the most sought after benefits of those seeking self-defense training. Whether it is for self-assurance that you could defend yourself, or just to be able to say you are confident in yourself; self-defense is a great way to boost your confidence level.

The fact that you have even thought about taking martial arts shows that you want to gain confidence in your life in some way or another and walking in is taking the first step to proving to yourself, and others, that you have confidence.  However, finding the path to confidence lies with more than just martial arts training. It takes a positive attitude and an open mind.  Martial arts training will help you, help yourself, gain more confidence. Whether it’s Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) or if you want your child to gain more confidence through our Children’s Programs; Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts is teaching the most realistic and practical self-defense classes in the North Shore and surrounding areas.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, we don’t just teach you a series of moves for self-defense. We instill within you the confidence, through self-defense, to know you are prepared to handle yourself in ANY situation.
