Krav Maga: Civilian Self-Defense with Military Roots

DSC_0191

In the tale of Imi Lichtenfeld and his staunch defense of Bratislava turf in the 1930s, we see an athlete adapting to the times by perfecting street fighting. Later, when Lichtenfeld was advising the Israeli Defense Forces on his “contact combat” techniques, the focus was on soldiers who carried weapons and traveled in battalions. Upon retiring from the army in the 1960s, Lichtenfeld refined his technique and brought it back to its roots from the days in Bratislava. Today’s Krav Maga represents a hybrid of military and street fighting tactics.

The Struggle for Eastern Europe

As Slovakia and other parts of Easter Europe fell to Nazi and fascist forces, the Jewish ghettos became warzones. Lichtenfeld’s hand-to-hand combat technique was pure survival: when he saw a knife exposed, he learned to dodge and when he saw a pack of men, he learned to evade and advance to keep them off-balance; and when he had the opportunity, he struck hard and fast so assailants never got a second chance. This approach was the essence of Krav Maga: street fighting to survive one of the ugliest periods in history.

Birth of an Israeli Nation

The country of Israel was the UN’s answer to the need for a home for exiled and displaced European Jews. Lichtenfeld had been in the country since the 1940s and became a fixture in paramilitary organizations. As the IDF emerged, he remained one of the key forces in training soldiers in self-defense and rapid response to aggression. His “contact combat” technique was military-ready. Soldiers could disarm opponents carrying weapons of all times and attack even when helmets and other protection were in place.

Return to Civilian Self-Defense

When Lichtenfeld retired from the IDF, he used his experience from his Bratislava days as well as his time in the military to perfect a technique that civilians could use for everyday safety. The Israel of his time was as insecure as the modern nation, forcing every civilian find a way to protect him or herself. Instead of advising how to take a machine gun from an opposing solider, Lichtenfeld showed students how to take a knife away and how to block punches and expect advances.

The system of Krav Maga in practice around the world is a product of this final refinement by Lichtenfeld after his military days. Physical fitness and mental toughness remain the cornerstones of the technique. From his early days as a boxer and wrestler, Lichtenfeld knew the importance of stamina, endurance and stubbornness in the face of long odds. Every Krav Maga fighter learns how to make his or her way out of a tough situation. Every Krav Maga fighter knows how to stop an opponent from coming back a second time.

In some ways, the approach of the IDF and regular civilians is the same. Though civilians are typically alone and do not face assailants carrying heavy weapons, the need to stand up to danger and overcome it is the same. Krav Maga fighters know how to come out on top and survive in the toughest possible spots.

Martial Arts, Top 10 best Styles to Get Fit while learning to defend yourself!

Reference: FLAMEHORSE MAY 15, 2010

Image

Martial arts are great as spectator sports and a good way to get fit, but they really come into their own when they are used in self-defense – undoubtedly the ultimate result for many of them. This list looks at ten of the best martial arts for if you are especially interested in defending yourself against attackers.

10. Kickboxing

9. Karate

8. Aikido

7. Wing Chun

6. Jiu Jitsu

5. Jeet Kune Do

4. Western Boxing

This hybrid mixes Jiu-jitsu’s standing throws and strikes with ground fighting, which emphasizes joint manipulation and overall control of the opponent, effectively ending a fight very quickly. The larger the attacker, the more easily he can be grappled off his feet, using his center of gravity against him.

2. Keysi Fighting Method

It is Israel’s national martial art, developed largely by Imi Lichtenfeld,  for the purpose of street survival. It incorporates Western boxing punches, Karate kicks and knees, Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu ground fighting, Jiu-jitsu throws and grappling, and most importantly, “bursting,” adapted from Wing Chun. This is a simultaneous defense/attack: instead of blocking an attack and then delivering a response, you block the attack and deliver a response at the same time, i. e., block with the left arm and push forward with the legs, striking with the right fist to the throat, all simultaneously.

Also stressed are attacks to vulnerable body parts: the eyes, throat, and groin.  Emphasis is also placed on disarming attackers with both knives and handguns, and turning these weapons on the attacker. It also exclusively trains hand-eye coordination, until defense becomes second nature and does not require thought. And a good Krav Maga instructor can teach all of this to anyone, regardless of athletic prowess.

The 5 Cornerstones of Krav Maga

ImageLearning the Krav Maga technique requires total physical commitment as well as mental toughness that can carry you through challenges of all kinds. In the past 75 years, much has changed since Imi Lichtenfeld first fought for his neighborhood in Slovakia. However, several cornerstones of the technique have held firm. Every Krav Maga fighter of the past and present has learned to approach each of these elements with complete focus.

  1. Self-defense. The key is not meeting strength with strength in Krav Maga. Instead, you are taught to look for weaknesses in a typically larger opponent. Trading blows is inadvisable and dangerous under the circumstances. Try to hit in the throat, the groin or the eyes to put an aggressor on the defensive. You need to be precise when going after these targets or you will be faced with a secondary attack.
  1. Offense. Defense stops the attack of an assailant. You block a punch; stop a kick; deflect a tackle; or avoid a chase. Once you are in the clear, you need to make sure your attacker can’t lodge another assault. React swiftly and pummel your opponent into submission. Unless you move quickly and inflict damage, you are putting yourself in further danger. In Krav Maga, the best defense is a good offense.
  1. Disarming assailants. Taking weapons from opponents is essential to preservation. You might be threatened with knives, guns, bats, chains, sticks, swords or any number of terrifying objects in the course of your defense. Devise a technique with teachers to respond to the deployment of any weapon imaginable. While military operations require this skill, it is useful for civilian defense as well.
  1. Fighting with supreme confidence. Stepping into a sea of enemies and emerging in sound health is a feat that requires the ultimate concentration and supreme confidence. Krav Maga black belts are known for fearlessness and power in the face of high danger. Prepare mentally for the greatest challenges a human being can face and you will be ready to confront the most fearsome challenges that come your way.
  1. Achieving the highest level of stamina. In a fight to the death or during flight from menacing forces, the utmost in stamina is required of Krav Maga masters. As you progress through the different levels of skill, push yourself to train at levels of strength and endurance you never thought possible. Becoming a master at this self-defense technique requires a total physical commitment. There is no telling what type of endurance may be required of a fighter with his back against the wall.

The locations and the type of fighting have changed since Lichtenfeld honed his warrior technique in Bratislava. What hasn’t changed is the fearlessness with which a Krav Maga fighter must approach combat on a daily basis. Keeping your cool and moving from defense to decisive offense is the only way to make a foe submit. Learn from your masters how to become the state-of-the-art fighter you can be with Krav Maga.

To Compete or To Not Compete: That is The Eternal Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Question

Can you become good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if you do not compete in tournaments?

That question sometimes brings forth a lot of controversy and it really should not be considered controversial at all.  All you have to do is look at the many different people of all belt ranks that are not active competitors and it becomes obvious they have solid skill levels.

That said, competing in BJJ Tournaments does bring your skill level to a much higher level much quicker. While you do not need to compete to be a great BJJ practitioner, there is great value in competing in tournaments. This is why it is definitely worth the time and effort to give the tournament scene a try.

And besides, competing in tournaments is a lot of fun and nothing to be concerned or worried about.

Many people will be seriously worried about getting injured which is, honestly, a wise concern to have. However, a great deal of effort is put into ensuring that the safety of the competitors is maintained. As a result, serious injuries are not common in BJJ events.

You also do not need to be a national or world champion to say your tournament experience was worth the effort. You do not really even have to win. Getting out there and just doing things is enough to get some value out of the process.

Actually, that statement needs to be amended somewhat.

The tournament itself is not always where you learn the most. It is the training and preparation for the event that delivers the most value. When you invest in training for a tournament, you will work on your conditioning, your timing, and many other facets of your game. This helps you make tremendous strides in improvement that would not be the case had you solely trained to roll around in the gym.Training for competition brings forth a higher level of focus that will play a major role in enhancing the development of your abilities.

Focus can also take on greater value when it is combined with a definitive time frame for achieving an outcome. When you must compete at a tournament on a specific date, you will focus all your energies during a 8 week period where you will go into training mode. (Some may even extend this to 12 weeks) This leads you to concentrating on improving your skills within a definitive time period as opposed to slowly dragging out your improvements over a lengthier period of time. You may very well improve over time and, quite honestly, you could even be perfectly happy with the time that it takes you to improve. This is perfectly fine a many people are perfectly happy with such an approach to improvements. However, there are those that do wish they can improve much quicker and training for a tournament could provide the previously elusive answer to acquiring such results.

In short, take advantage of the opportunity to compete. There are only pros and no real cons.

Bullying Prevention with Martial Arts Salem MA

Bullying occurs when there is a power imbalance between the bully and the victim.  The Imbalance can occur from a physical standpoint or a social standpoint–meaning the bully feels he/she has power over the victim.

Power can appear in different forms: Verbal teasing/ Name calling,  written or cyber taunting, or physical strength.

Bullying, in a lot of cases, can be prevented by living a lifestyle of presenting yourself with confidence, being assertive, always being kind and having a positive attitude.

Over the course of this month, we will discuss a variety of techniques and strategies that can be used to balance the power; without having to use strength or force to physically defend yourself against a bully.

We use Martial Arts as a tool to improve confidence within our students; to assert themselves before (or during) a bullying situation.  The strategies we teach will decrease the possibility of your child of becoming a victim and increase the likelihood your child will become an up-stander by standing up for those being bullied–instead of a bystander.

You can help support our discussions by speaking with your children about bullying.  Discuss the importance that confidence, assertiveness, kindness, and a positive attitude and how it plays a key role in preventing bullying before it starts.  We also encourage you to come up with a positive family plan of action so your children will know just want you expect them to do when faced with a bully.

We are proud to help you and your children learn more to stop Bullying. Thank you for being a part of our STOP BULLYING Month!

This month, our weekly mat chats focus on our awareness about bullying.  We will discuss what a bully is and how to handle bullying before, and after it occurs.

Picture 3

1. Improved Cardiovascular Health

One of the most important exercise benefits associated with Krav Maga is an improvement in your cardiovascular health. Your cardiovascular system is composed of your heart, as well as the veins and arteries that transport blood. A weak cardiovascular system can result in shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, and in severe cases can even cause a heart attack. Research has found that the only real way to improve the status of the cardiovascular system is by participating in activities that stress the heart. Cardiovascular exercise consists of walking, biking, swimming and of course participating in martial arts, more specifically, Krav Maga. For best results, try to get in at least 30 minutes most days a week.

2. Weight Loss

Weight loss is another great benefit associated with martial arts. In one pound of fat is equal to approximately 3,500 calories. Therefore, in order to lose one pound of fat in a week, you must eliminate 500 calories from your diet each day. By participating in one hour of Krav Maga, you can definitely burn anywhere from 500-800 calories! You will be well on your way to great weight loss results.

3. Increased Muscle Tone

By participating in martial arts Krav Maga. you can greatly improve the amount of muscle mass you have in your body. The more muscle you have, the more toned your body will look. The higher your muscle mass, the higher your metabolic demands will be, and subsequently the more calories you will burn each day, thereby helping prevent obesity and even leading to potential weight loss. High levels of muscle mass also lead to increased agility, thereby preventing falls as you age.

4. Improved Reflexes

In order to be a good martial artist, you must have very fast reflexes. Research has found that by participating in martial arts, you not only improve your reflexes while performing the activity, but actually experience faster reaction times during all activities of your life. This is very important in a number of daily activities, such as driving and even cooking.

5. Improved Mood

Researchers have found that participating in a regular exercise routine is one of the best ways to improve your mood. Performing Krav Maga is not only a good way to relieve stress and frustration, but may actually help to make you happier. You won’t only feel the effects during the activity, either. The endorphins released by physical activity appear to be active in your body for as many as four hours after exercise.

Krav Maga: The Best Self-Defense Systems for Women?

Every day, women face dangers in every facet of life; from walking through an empty parking garage, to heading to your apartment after work.  Are you prepared for the assailant who may be waiting around the corner?  Modern self-defense techniques have been effective for many women who have felt vulnerable in urban and rural communities alike, but improvements can be made.  That’s where Krav Maga can help.  Krav Maga North Shore may prove to be the best self-defense system for women as it takes the strengths of all different martial arts, and combines them; making Krav Maga so effective.

A Complete Approach to Self-Defense

Stories are always circulating about what an attack can do to a community.  Before long, women feel insecure about going out alone at night.  Anyone unprepared to meet a physical or sexual assault, should proceed with extreme caution; however, you have the power to take control of the situation and be the imposing force, who should not be disturbed.  Krav Maga teaches that art of rapid response; preparing you to combat an assailant’s first move.  Beyond That, Krav Maga instills the fighter’s spirit in you.  When some makes and advance, you’ll make sure you are prepared to beat the challenge back.

A Survivor’s Approach to Self-Defense

Krav Maga creator, Imi Lichtenfeld, found himself in the worst situation possible: A Hungarian Jew, living in Bratislava (Slovakia) before World War II; he became target of anti-Semitic mobs prowling the streets for victims.  Lichtenfeld faced assaults with knives, chains, bats and more–often with multiple attackers testing his mettle.  In response, he learned to defend himself by any means necessary.  He sprang into action when he saw a knife; he circled and kicked when he saw two attackers approach and he jabbed quickly in weak spots of opponents to disable them and move on.

In essence, he learned how to meet and beat back attacks so assailants would not have a second chance.  The Krav Maga approach to women’s self-defense  follows the same principles.   If someone tried to intimidate you with a weapon: you’ll feel perfectly capable of disarming them.  If someone tries to lay a hand on you: you will take that arm and twist it until the aggressor is subdued.  Quick jabs to the the throat or solar plexus will make the assailant incapable of continuing.

Becoming the Essence of the Empowered Warrior

Taking the Krav Maga Approach to self-defense means in essence becoming a warrior who must be conquered.  Every Krav Maga practitioner feels the power within them.  It begins with rigorous fitness training.  You will feel improved balance, endurance and strength on every level.  You will be prepared to dive, lunge, kick, dodge and disable attackers.  You will become a complete fighting machine capable to count any assault that comes your way.

With Krav Maga Salem MA training under your belt, you will recognize the signs of impeding trouble and see how to avoid  it.  You never want to invite trouble; however, your instincts will not allow you to be the victim.

The Art of Gripping in BJJ/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

There are many important aspects to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu/BJJ that are somewhat overlooked by beginners. They are definitely not overlooked by those that reach a high-level of skill because such BJJ‘ers clearly display all these little nuances. One area many top players excel in would be the art of gripping.

Gripping is basically what it sounds like. It refers to how your hands grip and grasp your opponent. With the Gi, a large amount of your gripping will involve grasping the collar and the sleeves.  The pants legs are also grabbed and, to a lesser extent, you can grab the belt. (Beware – the belt moves around a lot so belt grips are somewhat unreliable)

Why is gripping important?

There are a few reasons why you would employ grips. Mainly, you do so to control and opponents and execute offensive and defensive maneuvers. Obviously, performing offensive and defensive maneuvers is a major part of the game.

In a sense, the reasons for gripping on the ground in BJJ/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is the same as gripping standing in Judo.  In Judo though, a greater emphasis is placed on grips very early at the beginner level. Gripping definitely is not something to be overlooked on the ground because of the many benefits to using it.

A few of the gripping techniques are about as simple. If someone is in your guard you can grip the sleeve and pull their arm forward to execute an armbar or a triangle. You could grip the collar and sleeve to pull someone down to prevent them from getting the posture to pass the guard. If you are trying to pass the guard, gripping the sleeve can be employed to press the arm down and hold it in place so it cannot defend the guard pass.

To repeat, gripping can be used to apply any offensive or defensive tactic.

There is a bit of controversy regarding the use of grips. Namely, there are those that say gripping is another form of stalling. This can be true if the person gripping his/her opponent is not doing anything and only trying to kill the clock. If the person is being active then it would be impossible to say what he is doing is stalling.

It is advised that if you wish to employ gripping techniques you should perform conditioning exercises that can help improve your grip. Squeezing an isometric rubber ball would be one example of an easy way you can develop your grip abilities. Even a few minutes per day can lead to a great improvement.

Don’t allow gripping to be an overlooked component of your game. Putting the proper effort into developing your grip game could lead to many improvements in how you actually perform.  And you definitely want to improve. That is why you are training in the first place.

Martial Arts and Bullying. Get your Kids Back to School Ready!

What can you do to protect your child from bullying?

The key to helping your child if he or she is being bullied, is to be familiar with the warning signs of bullying.  Talk with your children.  Be involved.  Talk with the school and if they don’t have a bullying program already, help set one up.  Statistics show that schools that have bully programs–bullying is reduced by 50%.

The second way to help your child cope with bullying is to enroll them in martial arts.  Studies show that children enrolled in martial arts, make better, more thought out decisions and are less likely to be influenced by their peers.  Martial arts also gives kids confidence.  Which can be beneficial in many aspects of your child’s life beyond bullying.  Confident children are less likely to be picked on in school.  Confidence can also help your child with their school work and getting through day-to-day activities.

At Dragon Within Martial Arts, Salem MA; we strive to teach kids how to intelligently cope with bullying.  We teach children that violence isn’t the answer… to use their “common sense before self-defense”; however, if that doesn’t work, we will give your child the skills needed to properly defend themselves from physical and mental bullying.  Unlike traditional martial arts schools, which focus on tournaments and fancy moves; Dragon Within  Martial Arts teaches the most realistic self-defense system for your children that’s fun, interesting and extremely beneficial for the positive development of their future.

Along with learning something that’s fun and keeps your kids physically active; our age specific curriculum, teaches important social values and instills a high level of confidence within children:  starting with our Little Dragons Program (ages 4-6) to our Junior Programs (7-13) all the way up to our Teen Martial Arts Program (13-16).  Dragon Within helps children cope with being bullied and peer pressure.  We not only help kids cope with being bullied  but we instill positive social values such as: respect, honesty, humility, dignity and help children get along with others and treat them with respect.  Instilling these social values early on will help prevent your child from possibly becoming a bully.

Knowing self-defense empowers children with powerful techniques, strategies and confidence for life-long success!
