Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ: Do you Gi or No Gi?/@DWMMA

The great thing about being human, is that we have our own unique thoughts and preferences. Opinions vary person to person and individuality is a virtue. People like dogs more than cats for their own personal reason. Somebody may like blue while the other likes yellow. It’s all a matter of personal taste. So it doesn’t surprise me to see that people have their own personal preference regarding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ.

Gi… or no Gi… that is the question. I know, tacky, but I couldn’t resist.

A lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ practitioners favor no Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training to training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ with a Gi. If you are one of these people–prepare for BJJ edification!

When Training with a Gi, there is a structured belt system. You have a sense of progression. When you hear about UFC Welterweight Champion, MMA/Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Georges St. Pierre being a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he does it all with a Gi.

There is a lot more techniques when grappling with a Gi, you improve your posture, your positioning and therefore…your technique. Things are a little slower- allowing you to move more concisely. You can transfer what you learn from the classes you take in Gi, to no Gi classes. In fact, it will help your game if you train both.

When practicing BJJ with a Gi, you are increasing your self-defense techniques as well. You will learn how to manipulate the Gi to your advantage. A gi top is no different than a jacket. The probability of you getting into a scuffle with someone that is dressed for a no Gi confrontation is probably rare. Being able to use their clothes to your advantage is a definite benefit to training with a Gi.

Mixed Martial Arts/MMA: UFC 133 Jorge Rivera vs Costantinos Philippou

T- 4 days until UFC 133 on August 6th at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.  UFC 133 is headlined by former light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans squaring off for the second time.

Check out Dragon Within Mixed Martial Art‘s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) mentor BJJ Black Belt Tim Burrill in the corner for UFC Middleweight, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera in his fight against Costantinos Philippou. Originally, the opponent for Jorge was Alessio Sakara but Sakara had to drop out due to a knee injury.  Castantinos (Casta), who was originally matched up with Rafael Natal on the UFC 133 undercard, will be stepping up to meet with Jorge.

The match-up between Rivera and Sakara is seemingly doomed since this will be the third match up attempt and third time scratched.   Either way,  whether its Sakara or Casta–Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts will be watching Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera use all the submissions and chokes and sweeps he taught us at the last Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ)/Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) workshop.
