Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ: Do you Gi or No Gi?/@DWMMA

The great thing about being human, is that we have our own unique thoughts and preferences. Opinions vary person to person and individuality is a virtue. People like dogs more than cats for their own personal reason. Somebody may like blue while the other likes yellow. It’s all a matter of personal taste. So it doesn’t surprise me to see that people have their own personal preference regarding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ.

Gi… or no Gi… that is the question. I know, tacky, but I couldn’t resist.

A lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ practitioners favor no Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training to training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ with a Gi. If you are one of these people–prepare for BJJ edification!

When Training with a Gi, there is a structured belt system. You have a sense of progression. When you hear about UFC Welterweight Champion, MMA/Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Georges St. Pierre being a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he does it all with a Gi.

There is a lot more techniques when grappling with a Gi, you improve your posture, your positioning and therefore…your technique. Things are a little slower- allowing you to move more concisely. You can transfer what you learn from the classes you take in Gi, to no Gi classes. In fact, it will help your game if you train both.

When practicing BJJ with a Gi, you are increasing your self-defense techniques as well. You will learn how to manipulate the Gi to your advantage. A gi top is no different than a jacket. The probability of you getting into a scuffle with someone that is dressed for a no Gi confrontation is probably rare. Being able to use their clothes to your advantage is a definite benefit to training with a Gi.

Cross Training vs Single Arts: Mixed Martial Arts Training/@DWMMA

Why cross train?  What are the benefits of cross training in different martial arts?  Success in modern martial arts lies in adapting many styles.  While each martial art has its attributes– it has its gaps as well.  By cross training in different arts, you fill yourself with more knowledge of different self-defense skills that make for a more well-rounded defense system.

At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, all of our programs compliment each other accordingly.  We offer Thai Kickboxing, which is a great stand up art where you learn how to successfully strike and defend yourself on your feet.  You learn the basic punches, knees, elbows and kicks.  It’s an effective art when it comes to standing up and understand the ranges of fighting.   However, there are no ground techniques.  If you need to be able to defend yourself in someone gets you to the ground, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) will fill in the gap of the “ground game” that Thai Kickboxing is missing.  Most fights will go to the ground, so understanding position controls and how to get back on your feet is very important.   Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, which is a great combination of Panatukan (filipino “dirty” boxing), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) and Filipino Stick and Knife defense tactics (Kali/Arnis/Eskrima).   Taking both Thai Kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), will help you get into more details on those elements of Filipino Jiu-Jitsu which will improve your self-defense skills immensely.

Cross training in different arts that compliment each other can be extremely beneficial to the practitioner by making your self-defense techniques more realistic and practical by filling the gaps that you encounter in each art.  This is why Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) is such an effective “fighting style”.  The definition of Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) isn’t the  training of particular martial arts, it’s a combination of many arts such as: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Western Boxing.  Our goal, at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, is to offer you the most realistic, and functional self-defense training around and with cross training in different martial arts, you will be confident that you will be able to defend yourself in virtually ANY situation.
