Progression To Black Belt: What does it mean?

There is a lot of questions regarding our newest saying written up above on the beam giving sturdy foundation to our building:  WE ARE A BLACK BELT SCHOOL.  What does that mean?  It means that it’s our mission, as martial arts instructors, and as leaders, to help you EARN that black belt.  It doesn’t mean that everybody who walks through that door will get a black belt.  It means that once you put that clean, bright, white belt on and step onto the mat–it is the beginning of a fantastic journey in the progression towards earning your black belt.

Now,  a black belt itself is nothing more than fabric placed upon your waste.  You wear your belt with pride and respect for martial arts, but the value of BEING a black belt is much more.  It is about knowledge, dedication, discipline, respect, commitment to martial arts and humbleness to know that even once you’ve reached that coveted black belt, your journey has just begun.

The lot of people who come in looking to take Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, or even Krav Maga, don’t necessarily have earning their black belt as their driving force behind taking martial arts.  Some do it for fitness, self-defense or even just for fun.  Somewhere along the way, something clicks within them– that on top of all the great benefits of martial arts, there is a solemn driving force of transforming as a human being, intellectually and spiritually being in tune.   Of not getting your black belt but BEING a Black Belt.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and It’s Relevence to the Street

There are many different reasons for training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or any type of martial arts–whether it’s for fitness, confidence, self-defense, competition or self-expression; each individual starts for his or her own reason.  Whatever it may be the motivates you to practice martial arts; I believe that deep down inside, everybody would like to feel that they could defend themselves if they had to.  Self-defense is one of the deepest roots and traditions of martial arts.

So, how could practicing an art like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where no strikes are involved, teach you how to defend yourself in a situation where there are no rules?
The benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, lie in the nature of the training and the aliveness of the art.  A skilled practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, is used to feeling the pressure of an opponent, comfortable in physically stressful situations and can manipulate somebody else’s energy.

The sheer adrenaline and stress of a street altercation can be very shocking to your system as you undergo the “fight or flight” response.   I belive that after training and understanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ, you will be able to maintain your composure and quick thinking in the high stress situation of a street fight, because it sharpens the body and the mind a very unique way.

Learn Self-Defense, Gain Confidence and Get in Great Shape. Discover how anyone can Train and Enjoy Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ,  regardless of your Age, Fitness level or Experience Level.

Thinking About Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Salem Massachusetts

Have you thought about starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Salem MassBJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Salem Massachusetts) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position.  It uses joint-locks and choke holds to force an opponent to submit and also teaches you how to escape encounters on the ground.  Today, BJJis practiced for fun, self-defense or sport by men and women, hobbyists, professional fighters, military, and law enforcement alike.

It is no surprise that with the onset and extreme success of UFC and Mixed Martial Arts, the popularity of BJJ(Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Salem Massachusetts) also increased.  Nowadays, in addition to having a competition aspect; BJJ is also taught as a realistic tool for self-defense.

Here are a few tips to those who are thinking about starting BJJ/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  How you can successfully “survive” the first few months and have a positive experience to obtaining your black belt.

The most important tool you need when starting any martial art, especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a positive attitude.  Having the wrong attitude off the bat will either make or break your BJJ experience.  The first class will probably be a blink and it’s over because of all the excitement; however, the excitement will soon turn to frustration because BJJ is a complex martial art.   Positive thinking will help you go a long way.  You will not be amazing right off the bat… it’s a long journey in learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu so by keeping your attitude adjusted and mind open, you will learn the techniques correctly.  Which is the strongest lesson learned in BJJ: it’s all about technique.

BJJ is a combat sport.  The techniques used could be harmful in some cases but we practice them in a safe environment.  There is a safety mechanism called “tapping” for exactly this reason.  Tapping is letting know your training partner that you submit.  It keeps you and your partner from getting injured.

But knowing when to tap isn’t simply enough. You also need to learn to become a good training partner. One thing to keep in mind while practicing martial arts like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that you’re responsible for your partner’s health and learning process as much as yours.

Last, but certainly not least, is hygiene!  BJJ is a very close-quarters martial art, and good hygiene is extremely important for both safety and mental reasons.  Keeping good personal hygiene is a must. So make sure your fingernails are trimmed and that your Gi isn’t the equivalent to sticking your face in a dirty gym bag.  One way to get unpopular extremely fast is to come to the class with a dirty Gi and smelling of onions and cigarettes.

Learn Realistic Self-Defense Techniques with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Salem Mass

In a “perfect world”  the best way to defend yourself would be to avoid dangerous situations all together.  Unfortunately, that will only work to a certain point.  It’s almost impossible to avoid risk all together; since dangerous situations can develop with little to no warning and could be from the people whom you would least likely expect.  I know the facts are scary: but they are true.

When looking for the correct program to learn self-defense; tradition martial arts won’t work as well as combative martial arts.  At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  program is both a practical and realistic form of self-defense.  In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Salem Mass, we teach you how to defend yourself both on the ground and standing.

FACT:  If you don’t know how to defend yourself on the ground– you don’t know how to defend yourself!

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Salem Mass, is well suited for men, and women of all ages, fitness and experience levels because physical strength and athletic abilities are not essential. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position. It uses joint-locks and choke holds to force an opponent to submit. Today, BJJ is practiced for fun, self-defense or sport by hobbyists, professional fighters, military, and law enforcement alike.

In addition to learning effective self-defense, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  Massachussetts, also provides the student with the means to improve their physical fitness, awareness, flexibility and self-confidence.

Balancing Your Martial Arts Training/@DWMMA

In martial arts mythology, we often hear the story of the dragon and the tiger.  The tiger represents a hard, linear and aggressive style, whereas the dragon embodies the circular, flexible and soft style of martial arts. When many people first start in Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ or Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, it’s all tiger, all the time.  They ferociously pound away on the Thai pads or charge their opponent like a bull in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ. The tiger overshadows the dragon.  However, the dragon also represents learning and wisdom — if the tiger rules our actions and emotions, our aggressive tendencies literally stifle our ability to learn and grow as a martial artist.  The true martial artist strives to balance the tiger and the dragon — using aggression and power only when necessary to achieve a specific goal. So, the next time the tiger appears, calm down, slow down and think about unleashing the Dragon Within — your game will thank you for it!

MMA/Mixed Martial Arts Fitness and Diet Tips/@DWMMA

Ever wonder how the MMA/Mixed Martial Arts Fighters on UFC (ultimate fighting championship) stay fit and make-weight for their matches?  The fact that martial arts isn’t just for people looking for martial arts training.  It’s a good way to lose weight and stay fit.  Our programs at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, will give you the cardio, calisthenics, weight lifting, circuit training and MMA/mixed martial arts training you need to stay fit.  The exercises you do in these programs are often the same ones that Jorge Rivera, Georges St. Pierre or Brock Lesnar do to keep in shape.

Along with keeping physically active with martial arts training, you should really look at some habits you may have in regards to diet and try to improve on them with these 5 tips:

Diet Tweak #1: Don’t eat after 6pm
This is such a simple and effective way to lose fat. Late night eating is the most damaging to your waistline, so cut it out completely.

  • Brush your teeth immediately following dinner. Once your teeth are brushed, you’ve put a period to the end of your consumption for the day.
  • Change your evening routine. If you’ve always ended your day watching your favorite shows with your hand in the snack bowl, then now is the time to change things up. Find activities that don’t revolve around food and stick with those.
  • Make it a habit. The first few weeks will be the hardest, but soon your new no-food-after-6pm routine will feel normal.

Diet Tweak #2: Cut back on carbs
Notice I didn’t say to cut out all carbs, but rather to cut back on carbs. These diet tweaks are meant as lifestyle changes that you stick with long-term. Cutting back on carbs is a realistic and very effective way to lose weight.

  • Always choose whole grain bread and pasta over white. Whole grains are less likely to be stored as fat than processed grains.
  • Eat half of the carbs you normally do. Eat your sandwich open-faced and reduce the size of your pasta serving.
  • Avoid carb-filled snacks between meals. Instead of crackers or chips, have fresh fruit and veggies.

Diet Tweak #3: Eat more fiber
Most people simply do not get enough fiber in their diets. Fiber is essential when it comes to getting lean since it is low-calorie while filling you up.

  • Instead of seeing salad just as a side item, make salads into meals. Add protein to a large pile of greens for a guiltless meal. *Try the recipe for Grilled Salmon and Peach Salad below.
  • Make veggies a part of every meal. The benefits of eating more vegetables are too numerous to list, just know that your body will become healthier and leaner with each fibrous bite.
  • Fruits are a delicious source of fiber. Incorporate fresh, seasonal fruits into your daily diet.

Diet Tweak #4: Drink tons of water
Drinking plenty of water is another extremely simple way to promote weight loss. Chronic dehydration leads to false hunger signals and unnecessary calorie consumption.

  • Drink a large glass of water before each meal. This will prevent overeating.
  • Choose water instead of sugar-filled sodas and juices. Sugar-filled drinks are a huge weight-gain trap.
  • Carry a water bottle with you throughout your day. Keep water in the car and at your desk for constant hydration.

Diet Tweak #5: Enjoy natural sweets
Traditional sugar-filled sweets will quickly add up around your waistline. Instead of going for sugary sweets, enjoy natural sweets.

  • Fruit is nature’s candy. Reach for sweet, seasonal fruit for dessert.
  • Avoid foods that contain white sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Consider these items ‘anti-flat-abs’.
  • Use wholesome sweeteners such as pure maple syrup, brown rice syrup or dates in your recipes instead of white sugar. Eliminate white sugar from your kitchen.
*fact*  It’s OK to Cheat!!!

Does the thought of eating healthy everyday make your head spin?  Establish a weekly “Cheat Day” where you allow yourself a taste of all your favorite indulgences.   It’s OK to cheat once a week – just indulge with control, and stick with your clean eating habits on all other days.

Eating right, coupled with martial arts training such as: Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-JItsu/BJJ, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts/MMA and Burnout: Strength and Conditioning– will give you the tools for a toned, lean body.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ: Do you Gi or No Gi?/@DWMMA

The great thing about being human, is that we have our own unique thoughts and preferences. Opinions vary person to person and individuality is a virtue. People like dogs more than cats for their own personal reason. Somebody may like blue while the other likes yellow. It’s all a matter of personal taste. So it doesn’t surprise me to see that people have their own personal preference regarding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ.

Gi… or no Gi… that is the question. I know, tacky, but I couldn’t resist.

A lot of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ practitioners favor no Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training to training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ with a Gi. If you are one of these people–prepare for BJJ edification!

When Training with a Gi, there is a structured belt system. You have a sense of progression. When you hear about UFC Welterweight Champion, MMA/Mixed Martial Arts fighter, Georges St. Pierre being a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, he does it all with a Gi.

There is a lot more techniques when grappling with a Gi, you improve your posture, your positioning and therefore…your technique. Things are a little slower- allowing you to move more concisely. You can transfer what you learn from the classes you take in Gi, to no Gi classes. In fact, it will help your game if you train both.

When practicing BJJ with a Gi, you are increasing your self-defense techniques as well. You will learn how to manipulate the Gi to your advantage. A gi top is no different than a jacket. The probability of you getting into a scuffle with someone that is dressed for a no Gi confrontation is probably rare. Being able to use their clothes to your advantage is a definite benefit to training with a Gi.

Mixed Martial Arts/MMA: UFC 133 Jorge Rivera vs Costantinos Philippou

T- 4 days until UFC 133 on August 6th at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center.  UFC 133 is headlined by former light heavyweight champions Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans squaring off for the second time.

Check out Dragon Within Mixed Martial Art‘s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) mentor BJJ Black Belt Tim Burrill in the corner for UFC Middleweight, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera in his fight against Costantinos Philippou. Originally, the opponent for Jorge was Alessio Sakara but Sakara had to drop out due to a knee injury.  Castantinos (Casta), who was originally matched up with Rafael Natal on the UFC 133 undercard, will be stepping up to meet with Jorge.

The match-up between Rivera and Sakara is seemingly doomed since this will be the third match up attempt and third time scratched.   Either way,  whether its Sakara or Casta–Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts will be watching Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera use all the submissions and chokes and sweeps he taught us at the last Brazilian Jiu Jitsu(BJJ)/Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) workshop.

“The Knot”– The Journey of Martial Arts Progression

-Andrew Boyd

When you earn a new belt in Thai Kickboxing, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), it feels great.  Many people will ask “when did you get your belt?”  The answer, of course, is not last Tuesday, or last Thursday, or any specific point in time… you earned that belt every second of every minute you spent on the mat since the moment you first put on that white belt.  Too often, as martial artists, we strive to learn cool new things and increasingly complicated techniques– sometimes, this means that we gloss over, ignore or even forget the stuff that we thought we already knew.  When you get that coveted belt promotion, the instructor will tie your old belt in a knot– this  signifies that you are “locking in the knowledge of everything that you’ve already learned” as a foundation for you to build upon as you continue on your journey to black belt.

Remember the Knot when you put on that bright, stiff, new belt around your waist.  As you progress in the martial arts, techniques that you know now will take on new meanings in the future.  You’ll find applications for old material.  As that new belt fades and gets nicely broken in; remind yourself to revisit the old curriculum– do you see anything new?  Is there anything that is unclear?  The evals are a great time to ask these questions.
