Guard passing and learning how to do it…..

Learning the Critical Skill of Guard Passing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu At Dragon Within, We teach a unique style to our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We keep in mind everyones safety and ability. Making sure everyone is working to their full potential while keeping in mind they have limits.

Guard passing remains one of the most important skills to develop in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

The guard is a significant part of the Jiu Jitsu game since it offers both offense and defense on the ground even while situated on your back. The ability to pass the guard gives a Jiu Jitsu player an edge as well. Through being able to consistently pass the guard, the offensive and defensive capabilities of an opposing Jiu Jitsu player become less effective. Becoming talented at guard passing does not refer to learning a ton of different guard passes and merely memorizing them. Good guard passing skill is based on understanding a number of basic principles and being able to effectively execute them.

In order to pass the guard, you must go over or under the legs.

This is not always safe. At Dragon Within, we understand that without decent control of an opponent and good posture on your part, a weak guard pass leaves you vulnerable for sweeps and submissions. The process of passing the guard the properly begins with establishing good base and posture. Base refers to maintaining both stability and a low center of gravity, two traits critical to prevent from being off balanced or swept. Posture means your positioning protects the neck, arms, and legs from attacks. Once your posture and base are solid, the time comes to control the legs and, if the guard is closed, uncross the ankles.

Opening up the closed guard requires putting some level of pressure on the legs to force the ankles to uncross. Again, without good base and posture, this is not going to be easy at all. Once you have opened up the legs, you must control them along with the hips. With the open guard, you do not have to uncross the ankles. You simply go right into controlling the hips and legs, although this can sometimes be difficult based on the positioning certain open guard present.

Whether you choose to go over or under the legs, you positively must put pressure on your opponent. Controlling the hips is important to prevent an opponent from putting you back in the guard, although focusing solely on the hips while ignoring the importance of pinning him can make a guard pass weaker. The finishing positions of a guard pass is a pin be it side control, the scarf hold, or even the North/South position. To make a pin work effectively, you have to really anchor your weight down. This process has to start during the guard pass because, quite simply, a loose guard pass is not going to help keep anyone in place for a pin.

Developing these skills can take time.

Among the best ways to become better at guard passing is to drill. Your training partner can put you in a number of different guards. While the partner offers moderate resistance, you work on guard passing and pinning. Correct your flaws and mistakes and try to improve with each training session. Your guard passing skills might increase immensely as a result. And great improvement could come far quicker than you ever imagined.

Elbows In! Protecting Yourself When Pinned

No one likes to be pinned down in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Pinning and holding is a large part of the game so anyone interested in learning Jiu Jitsu must learn how to deal with pins. The various top positions such as mount, side mount, north/south, scarf hold, and even knee on stomach are all designed to keep someone in place so in order to be submitted. Escape is the goal when you are pinned, but escaping is not always easy to do. You could end up being pinned for several minutes. To help reduce the chances of being submitted, your posture has to solidly defensive while also creating the best leverage for escaping.

Keeping the elbows close to the body would be among the most important of all posture considerations. There are two major problems present when the elbows are too far from the core of the body. The first is the arms are very vulnerable to submissions. An opponent can easily wrap under the elbow and go into a spinning armlock. The reason it is so easy to wrap the arm is the distance from the elbow and the body presents a significant amount of space.

The second problems is the arms lose a great deal of strength since supporting muscle groups cease to be involved. As a result, forcing the arm down to execute a bent shoulder lock is not all that tough. An opponent on top has a lot of leverage. Having weak arm posture further reduces the ability to defend the arms. Pulling the arms and elbows in towards the body makes attacking them dramatically more difficult.

In order to escape from the bottom, your elbows must press into points on the opponent’s body in order to create space. This is very difficult to achieve when the elbows are even slightly out of position. When they are too far from the body, they can offer no effective leverage at all.

Does this mean all hope is lost when your elbows are out of position. No, it just means you must make it a priority to bring them back in. Performing a simple short bridge to bump an opponent up can create enough space for just enough time to return the elbows to their correct position.

All of this takes practice and experience, but that is what training is for. As long as you continue to focus on good posture on the bottom, the chances are likely you will improve in no time.

guncrime

A man in Texas went on a killing spree after his wife put out a protective order against him. This man went looking for her anyway. When he couldn’t find her, he lost it. 6 people were murdered and 1 more in critical condition. I commend the survivor (age 15) for calling 9-1-1. But what if there was a way the other 6 could still be alive? Sure there is no dodging a bullet from this sick individual. And according to CNN news, he had been known to beat his wife and drag her around the house by her hair, while the kids watched. But what if that could have been avoided? Now this is just my honest opinion, but what is a piece of paper to a sick man like him? Also what is dialing a phone going to do when you have to wait up to 10 minutes for a response? It only takes less than a second to fire off a bullet from a gun. But what if these victims knew how to defend themselves? There are many methods of protection against a brutal man, and even knowledge of weapon control and how to handle a situation when a gun is present. There is no getting rid of guns forever, and even if we did, people would find something else to kill with. It is encoded in our DNA like wild animals. Now most of us can control our inner animal. But we can learn the mind-set of how to handle a situation. It takes a lot of training. It takes a lot of discipline and mind control. Now who knows what the exact situation was when this man walked into the house and shot everyone. I do believe there may have been no avoiding it. As soon as anyone sees a gun, they tend to freeze. Some of our highly trained military and police sometimes have a moment of uncertainty. All we can do is prepare mentally and physically.

On that note, I believe this mother could have defended herself during the brutal attacks. And the children could have learned how to protect themselves and mother against this individual. There are many techniques to handling a situation when the assailant is clearly bigger than you. There are techniques in Krav Maga that teach students how to defend themselves in a number of different situations. It will teach different holds and grabs to be able to get a smaller person out of the grasp of a bigger person. Similar strategies apply to Jiujitsu. BJJ is more ground oriented, but can show you how to take the battle to ground and how to defend against someone of any size. Both Arts use the strategies of leverage and force. It makes it simple for a smaller person to manipulate an assailants’ body weight and use it against them. Here at Dragon Within, we will not only teach you the proper way to handle a weapon attack, but how to avoid being attached in the beginning. For instance, we will show you that in a gun situation, when giving the attacker what ever he wants doesn’t work, you need to re-direct, control, attack and take away. These simple words can mean a lot when faced with a difficult situation. Getting that gun away from you and out of the attackers hand is key. We can also show you how to give yourself more room to breath when being choked. This way you will be able to breathe long enough to get out of what ever hold you are in. At Dragon Within, we take street defense seriously. There is no joking or taking it lightly.

Miss USA and how she stands up for martial arts.

self-defensebwDragon Within would like to take a moment to announce that Miss Nevada, a 4th degree black belt, took the win for Miss America 2014! Good for her, and she did it while standing up martial arts and believing in all that it stands for. But why the backlash? She stated in her interview that colleges are afraid to come out to the public when it comes to woman being assaulted so they brush it under the rug. How truthful she is. And she stands for women defending themselves even when no one else will. In fact statistic’s show that 19% of college girls are sexually assaulted and that the colleges do almost nothing about it.

At Dragon Within we agree with Miss Nevada. We think that all women should know how to take care of themselves. Woman should never get caught in a situation they can’t handle. We teach Krav Maga for just that reason. We want to keep everyone safe and well disciplined. From peer pressure to bullying to flat out being attacked, woman need to realize that they don’t have to be alone. With Krav Maga self defence techniques, woman will learn the striking and defense they will need in life to keep themselves out of trouble. Dragon Within even does private lessons to make sure students have a handle on the techniques of Krav Maga. No woman or student or child should be left to defend themselves, but unfortunately we can not change what is going in this world today. The only thing we can do is make sure each and every person is prepared for it and knows how to have discipline and how to react in any given situation. You can not change a person, you can only change yourself to get the reaction out of the person you want. And that reaction is to get them to leave you alone.

Weapons Control

krav_maga_gunHow many of us watch the news lately and are disgusted? All it ever contains is, who killed who; who kidnapped who; and who robbed who. Do you ever wonder what if that happened to you? Dragon Within offers weapons defense tools and weapons defense training. Don’t get caught somewhere with out the knowledge and preparation of how to handle yourself. We use tools in our Krav Maga class to teach students the difference between situations that you should evade or defend. We don’t want to see anyone get into a situation that they have to use these tools, but weapons are a serious thing and need to be taken seriously.

What if you had some crazed maniac in your face with a weapon and you had your children and family to think about? Would you defend yourself, or even know how? I know a lot of us think, “it won’t happen to me”. But the truth is, it could very well happen to you. Why wait for something to happen, why not take a stand and prepare yourself now! This world we live in isn’t getting any easier so we all need to learn to defend ourselves. And this doesn’t mean to go out and bully random strangers just because they may look suspicious. It just means to be prepared in the event that one day you may need the training and skill, and you want to be ready. Or maybe you want your younger children to be ready. We need to take gun shot wounds seriously and educate ourselves on the effects.

Don’t let yourself be a victim of a horrible crime. Learn how to defend yourself and stand up for yourself. Make sure your that person that a criminal can not take advantage of or hurt. Take Krav Maga and learn the tools and techniques to make a stand.

Getting To Know Martial Arts

Image

Many are skeptical about martial arts, especially when starting out. They often wonder if martial arts will be too much work or if they will even find it enjoyable, but if you ask anyone who has been doing martial arts a long time, these are common thoughts for one just starting out. The first few drills and training sessions will be the toughest as your body most likely isn’t familiar with the movements or the contact, but that will change. Each time you drill a certain technique, your body gets more and more used to it. Think of your body like a computer; each time you go through a movement or technique, you’re basically just programming your body. The more you do it the more your body becomes comfortable with it. Once you settle in and you become comfortable, that is where the fun begins. This is when you can open your skill set up to as many techniques as you can handle and learn different styles too.

If you’re not one that is comfortable with physical contact, I ensure you that Krav Maga offers nothing that will put you over the edge. After all, Krav Maga is primarily all self defense, so little contact is actually preferred in most scenarios. However, there are a few beginners that have a phobia of physical contact. Luckily for these people, martial arts offers many other styles, like Thai Kickboxing, that is just as much of an exercise as it is a martial art. While Krav Maga specializes in self-defense, thus requiring physical contact, martial arts like Thai Kickboxing is more independent. While there are many styles of Thai Kickboxing, the majority of them can be found enjoyable to the most hesitant people who fear close quarters and physical contact. As you will soon find out, Krav Maga and other martial arts have a huge pay off after that initial hump.

As comfort levels set in, you will find much enjoyment in practicing and learning techniques. You will make friends, learn things about yourself, and develop a strong, confident, mature, and new perception of life through the study of martial arts.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: A Martial Art and A Phenomenal Exercise

Image

Martial arts has always been used for athletes to compete via combat, but is also a fantastic way for people to exercise. One of the most popular martial arts today, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), is a multidimensional martial art that can really put your body through a tough work-out. Unlike standard exercise routines, you don’t have to exercise each individual muscle group; instead, you merely spend 20 minutes “rolling” (the term used for practicing, or sparring). After just 20 minutes of rolling with a partner and engaging in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your entire body will have received a work out that would have otherwise taken you hours.

Because most of BJJ is spent on the ground, you will end up putting lots of weight and pressure on your feet, knees, and thighs; especially if you are in top position. On the bottom, you may think that you have it easy being that you can lay on your back, but this is not the case. High-level BJJ practitioners do not in fact lay flat on their back. As relaxing as it may seem, this is a very bad flaw in technique. You want to be perched up, at least slightly, in order to spring into action. This requires a lot of core strength sourcing from your abs to remain in ready position when on your back.

In other positions it’s your arms that will get a work out. Much of BJJ comes down to “hand-fighting” which is the strategical battle that goes on between you and your opponents hands. Constantly fighting your opponent’s upper-body strength while attempting to maintain proper wrist control is a very physically demanding task.

Even though most BJJ matches are not spent on the feet, it does physically pose equally as intense. You will often tie up with your opponent in search of takedowns that could come from various wrestling techniques, or perhaps a variety of different Judo throws. Whichever means you seek out to attempt to get your opponent on the ground will prove physically demanding. It’s not easy throwing something your size and weight around; especially when it is fighting back.

BJJ provides an all-in-one package for those wanting to combine core workouts with upper-body and most importantly, a lot of fun. BJJ not only exercises the body, but also the mind. Most BJJ matches are fought as if they are chess-matches; it comes to sharp technique and proper positioning that wins or finishes matches. If you’re looking for a martial art that will benefit your body in multiple ways, BJJ is an excellent choice.

Krav Maga Is Better Than a Generic Gym Routine

ImageImage

Do you want to make a dedicated effort at getting in shape and developing a regular exercise routine, but don’t know exactly how to do it? You can find answer in Krav Maga. Krav Maga, a martial art centered in self-defense techniques, offers up a very long list of benefits that a regular exercise gym does not. You don’t have the luxury of really becoming one with your body by cycling on an elliptical, running on a treadmill, or lifting weights. Martial arts offers a whole new dimension of physical activity that is not exclusive to ripping muscles, but included strengthening your brain and heart as well.

It’s hard to explain the exact feeling you get when pursuing a goal or an achievement. It’s a sort of internal drive; an energy inside that seems to provide your body with the needed power. There aren’t many exercises you can do at a gym that will make you feel like you really accomplished something. Sure you can complete your reps at the bench-press station, or get a new record when maxing out on squats, but you don’t actually get rewarded. In martial arts, you are directly rewarded by earning your way up a variety of different colored belts. These colors represent your rank and is what you can proudly show off. The color of your belt represents how much work, time, and dedication you put out. This is something that people at a regular gym are missing out on.

Other than the satisfaction of earning your way up an actual ranking system, the overall environment is better. When you’re on the mats practicing Krav Maga, everyone is there to help each other out. There are no egos that get in the way and that is why martial arts is such a down-to-earth environment. People all share the enjoyment together, and are there to work their way up and prove something to themselves and others. This makes for a strong connection or camaraderie that you will develop in the bonds between you and your fellow Martial Artists. Again, something that is missing for sure at a regular gym.

Never Overlook BJJ as a Self Defense Art

Image

The popularity of the UFC and the massive growth of the tournament circuit has led many to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as a means of taking part in competition. This is all well and good, but there was a day when BJJ was taught primarily as a self-defense art.

You always have to be capable of defending yourself in today’s day and age. Learning BJJ can prove to be one of the best arts you can study when dealing with the realities of serious self-defense scenarios. Remember in any self-defense situation, there is always the potential for a grave injury or even a fatality. When you are on the ground you will find yourself in a dire situation because you are prone to suffering from a blunt trauma injury to the head as the result of kicks or repeated punches. Such an attack could lead to the aforementioned fatality.

While there are definitely no easy answers or solutions to any self-defense situation, learning BJJ can definitely help you survive an assault that leaves you on the ground. The most obvious reason would be the fact that it helps you move on the ground effectively and efficiently.  You won’t have any wasted motion that does little more than tire you out. You also will be able to move with an eye on proper defensive maneuvers that are designed to protect you from any serious potential injury.

What further contributes to the value of BJJ as a self-defense art, would be the fact that it is an art based on leverage as opposed to strength.  You do not want to combat a bigger and stronger assailant with force, since you will likely lose such an encounter. However, if you use leverage and the law of physics, you will find it possible to address such a tough attacker in a manner that actually uses the opponent’s strength against him.

One other thing that does need to be mentioned would be the fact that BJJ puts a great deal of emphasis on chokes which are perfect for dealing with a larger and more powerful opponent. No matter how strong a person may be, if a choke is properly sunk in then the person is going to go to sleep – i.e. pass out.  BJJ will teach you how to choke someone out as well as get in the position where you actually can do so.

And yes, BJJ is an excellent art for getting someone under control without having to hurt them. In many self-defense situations, this approach would be the preferred one since not all altercations revolve around hurting someone.  For example if your older brother or spouse tried to pin you on the ground, you will learn and practice ways to remain safe and in control, without inflicting major injury.

Granted, it is still a good idea to study striking and even weapons based arts for self-defense like Krav Maga or Thai Kickboxing, but BJJ does fill in a host of gaps in your self-defense game. Most people just do not know how to properly defend themselves on the ground.  By practicing BJJ, you too can learn how!

Bully Prevention Calls for Community

 Image

Is your child having trouble with bullies at school?  Dragon Within Martial Arts helps many different kids learn about bullying and how it can be prevented safely and respectfully.  Bullying is most commonly seen as being physical, verbal and always confrontational. Whether it’s kids or adults, face-to-face confrontations are frequently the way bullies go after their victims.   But it’s not the only way. Cyberbullying through internet social networks, texting and cell phones can be just as damaging as physical showdowns.  Bullying will not cease to exist unless kids police themselves and their friends.  Here at Dragon Within we work with children to teach and motivate them to stand up for them selves and others facing a bully.  We show children how to defuse a bully by practicing a variety of self defense methods and movements.  We also conduct monthly “Mat Chats” where we sit together and discuss bullying and how to stop it.  It takes a sincere effort from both children and parents to successfully put an end to bullying.

Parent involvement and communication in their child’s life can also help prevent bullying.  Consistently providing a ride to and from class may be a good time where parents can address issues in school like bullying, and new friendships.  Parental presence should also extend into the digital world where new found “cyber bullying” can take place as well.  This new generation has proven that a iphone or laptop can become a weapon even in the hands of the most innocent-looking children.   The distant communication of the internet provides children with a way to hurt others at no physical risk of danger.  Kids who would never dream of shouting at another student or shaking a fist in someone’s face, can send threatening text messages or start vicious rumors on the Internet about another child.  One solution to cyberbullying could be that as a parent you must have them add you as a friend on Facebook and be permitted to follow them on Twitter and Instagram or they lose the privilege to the sites themselves.  You could also make it mandatory that you know the login information to their social sites.  Some other preventive steps that can avoid bullying can start at home with moms and dads talking to their kids, picking up on their conversations about other children, supervising their use of cell phones making sure that they become neither victims nor perpetrators of cyberbullying.  Some kids might find such intervention an invasion of privacy. Some parents might, too. But it’s like talking to children about drugs and alcohol. If you can save a kid’s life from ruin, your own or someone else’s, interceding is the right thing to do.

In order to stop bullying we have to understand why kids do it.  Some bully because they feel insecure.   At Dragon Within we help our students develop self confidence.  Building self confidence is very important because it strengthens your child’s integrity and self esteem.  These are building blocks to making good decisions outside of school like issues involving bully prevention and peer pressure.  Other kids bully because they simply lack self control and coping mechanisms to deal with anger and frustration.  We demonstrate the importance of being focused and controlled in class so that they may reflect the same self control when faced with a bully outside of class.  The positive social values like self control and self confidence may also be just what your child needs to not become a bully or cyberbully.

At our academy we teach our students that bullying is unacceptable. We help establish rules about bullying and we stick to them.   We also teach kids to treat others with respect and kindness.   Our institution houses a diverse student body and is great for children to learn how to treat all different kinds of people with the same respect and kindness.  In our monthly Mat Chats we discuss with our students, how to identify situations that may lead to bullying so that they can recognize and prevent it from happening.  If your child is being bullied or is getting in trouble at school for bullying, Dragon Within Martial Arts can help.
