Dragon Within at NAGA

nagaSo some of our readers may have heard about the national NAGA tournament that just came to Hartford Ct. But do all of our readers really get the intensity and mental commitment it takes to compete? We aren’t talking about a friendly game of ball in the back yard. We are talking about sweating and training for months on end just to hope your technique will beat the others. And for some, the hard work pays off. If you loose or win, its about the dedication and commitment. “NAGA has been a leader of the grappling revolution for many years and has pushed the sport forward by providing a fun and fair environment for athletes and schools to engage in competition to increase their skills and to foster positive and social family-oriented behavior”. Todd Hester, Publisher, Gladiator Magazine

Same goes at Dragon Within we will help train students who want to compete get ready. We keep a fun and family friendly environment. We are close with each student like they are part of our Dragon family. Just recently we had one young adult and one adult bjj student go down to Rhode Island to compete. Both of these students brought there “A game”. It took a lot of nerve and inspiration for these brave students to compete. We’ve watched them come early to class and stay late after class almost every day just to get an inch closer to being ready. And it worked. One of our students went for his first tournament and came home with not one but two silver medals. Now that’s something to show off. We are very proud of both these students who went down there and were team players even if they didn’t win a contest.

It’s not always about winning, its about the experience and the knowledge you will gain out of competing. At Dragon Within we take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to a whole new level with training and building confidence in our students. We instill in students the importance of concentration and respect. These things are key to every becoming a great competitor. So if your looking to compete, or even just to train and learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Dragon Within has what it takes to teach any student what it takes.

krav Maga Self Defense

combat-healthOkay let’s face it, we have all had confrontation at some point or another. We have all had that irritating person in line that picks a fight for no reason. Or have had to deal with a client that we would love to take outside and teach them a lesson. Everyday we face these people. But how is it we don’t act on our instincts? In the animal kingdom, animals fight all the time to the death. But as humans, we are expected to hold it together.

Truth is, it doesn’t always work. As humans we sometimes don’t hold back our manors. We act on instinct to kill. And some of us do just that. Then someone else evaluates them and has every excuse in the book as to why they did it. Okay great, but now how are the rest of us supposed to just deal with that? I mean it’s a vicious cycle. We witness ones family member be attacked and we want to attack someone else. So instead of giving in to these disobedient humans, we could always learn to adapt. We could learn to defend ourselves, while building discipline and confidence to be able to handle ourselves. And that is what Dragon Within aims to do.

Take Krav Maga for example. Krav Maga means contact combat in Hebrew. It is a self-defense based martial art. It takes a little from boxing, muay thai, judo, jiu-jitsu, grappling, and wrestling. Great now you are all wandering what in the world is all that? In simpler words, this style of martial art taught at Dragon Within, was created for the Israeli military. So an entire military system was using this way to defend them selves in battle. Of course over time it was adopted and re-evaluated for a more civilian appropriate approach. This doesn’t mean it was changed in a way that made it less effective.

Dragon Within is known for teaching Krav Maga as a well-known stand in neutralizing any threat while implementing defensive and offensive maneuvers towards aggression. In simpler words, you will learn to avoid the strike before it presents itself and how to counteract the strike if it is thrown at you. Dragon Within teaches students to avoid confrontation in Krav Maga. If it is not possible to do so, Dragon within promotes finishing a fight as quickly and effectively as possible. Attacks are taught to aim for vulnerable areas of the body. At Dragon Within, students are taught to defend themselves against many different styles of attacks and how to counter act them in the most efficient way. Training at Dragon Within can also cover situational awareness and how to be clear of ones surroundings and how to prepare for them.

So now your wandering is the world really that bad? Well why take the chance. Take the time and have the dedication to mentally prepare yourself for what is really out there in the world. We are only evolved animals that have not lost all of our animal instincts.

Martial Arts Is Not About Fighting

Here at Dragon Within we take pride in our philosophy and practices of Martial Arts.  We make it our mission to improve mental and physical wellness of our members.  We help our students gain self confidence and self control through a series of healthy exercise and self defense knowledge and practice.  Our Martial Arts program is designed to teach students patience and discipline through the journey within the Martial Art to a black belt.

We believe that within the structured Martial Arts classes our students develop self confidence, motivation to set and reach goals, respect, discipline, and self control.  Our class is taught at a pace which allows students to advance in their belt over time.  The time and work it takes to stay in class and earn a higher rank is what grows character, self discipline, and patience.  We understand that it is a difficult thing to stay motivated towards, which is why it is such a great achievement when they receive that next belt.  We stay focused on the Art and the way our curriculum is designed, helps develop positive character in our students over time.

The self defense skills taught in our class are specific to defending and escaping from a bully or attacker.   The skills are taught as a set curriculum within the specific Martial Art.  These practices are great to utilize as a cardio and fitness program.  Socially the class is great for people to stay motivated towards reaching their goals because it becomes a fun positive workout where you make friends and learn together.

Our students and staff practice and believe in compassion and patience when training.  We teach and understand our training at Dragon Within as a fun uplifting activity we do with our friends.   It is a place where you can forget about the stress of your workday and really focus on Martial Arts with your best buddies!

Dragon Within Martial Arts is specifically a Martial Arts academy.  Our school is structured with students, teachers, and the golden rule; “Treat others the way you would like to be treated”.  Our classes are taught in a fun and friendly manner.  Our classes teach children to be patient, confident, focused, and steadily working toward their next belt.  Our classes teach adults to be patient, confident, focused, and steadily working towards their next belt respectively.  Every one has their own journey to their black belt and so our instructors stay motivated to helping you at any speed you feel comfortable with, to earn it and meet any other goals you may have!   Come learn with us today! 🙂

3 Tips for Success in Martial Arts!!

Image

The New Year is here!   Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, and Thai Kickboxing classes are turnt up for the New Year, New Body Fitness Program.  Goals have been set, and sweat has been dripping.  The intensity is there but the question remains; what does it take to keep it there all year long? What will it take to follow through with your New Year’s Resolutions?

1.) BE FOCUSED.  Tony Robbins says, “there is power in clarity.”  Most of the New Year motivation arises out of being focused on what you truly want.  More importantly, knowing why you want it.  You must develop clarity if you are going to follow through with your goals.

It’s been said, “Discipline without direction is drudgery.”  You have to be clear on what you are trying to accomplish, and why you want to accomplish it.  Many people don’t accomplish their goals because they become distracted.  They become caught up in what Stephen Covey calls the “thick of thin things”.  They become distracted by the busyness of life.  They don’t mean to do this, but many times urgent pressing matters takes precedence over things we think can wait till later.  The problem is that we never get around to those things.  We tend to deal with the urgent things of the moment, things that wont matter in five years,  and we never get around to following through on things that will have an impact on the quality of your life five years from now.

If you want to follow through on those goals, I mean really follow through and make this year your best year ever, then step one is to develop clarity. Questions you should write down are:  What do you want to accomplish?  Why do you want to accomplish it?  Be specific.  Don’t just say you want to get in better shape.  How many pounds do you want to lose?  What do you want your body fat to be?  After answering these questions on paper you can show your instructors and together we can help keep you and your fitness program stay focused on accomplishing these goals.

2.) BE FIRED UP!  Motivation gives us the emotional gas in our tank to continually follow through with our goals.  Attitudes are caught before they are ever taught.  The best way to stay motivated is to be around other people who are highly motivated.   By coming to class you are doing this first step by surrounding yourself with other motivated people.  Many people will become discouraged when go home and their motivation to stay fit wears off.  They think something is wrong with them because they don’t “feel” motivated.  Motivation is like taking a warm bath.  Naturally over time, the bath cools off unless you keep adding hot water.  By consistently coming to class and being around highly motivated people, that is like constantly adding hot water.  It charges you up and refuels your emotional tank.

3.) GO THE DISTANCE.  Starting is good. In fact, it’s very good.  The journey to achieving your black belt starts with your first step of showing up to your first class. After coming to class, day by day you begin to realize that finishing is even better.  You have to set your mind on the distance of the race.  Accomplishing your goals is not a sprint.  Its not about how fast you can get there.  Its more about consistently taking specific action over time.

Plan and prepare for the distance of the race.  What adjustments do you need to make in your schedule so that you can CONSISTENTLY be in class over a long period of time.  What adjustments do you need to make in your lifestyle so you can CONSISTENTLY follow through with new eating habits.  You must set your eyes, mind, and spirit on the longevity of the race.   Learn to develop a steady, methodical pace.  Many people who “go all out” on their goals never end up following through, because they commit to a pace they simply can’t maintain.  Realize that accomplishing your goals is more like a long distance race than a sprint.

Martial Arts class is designed to keep you learning new skills so that over time you will move up by achieving a new belt.  Wether its Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Krav Maga, or Thai kickboxing you will earn a higher rank (belt) by regarding the fitness program as a long distance race and consistently coming to class over time.

Let’s go the distance and make 2014 your best year ever!!!

Dedicated to your success,

-Dragon Within Martial Arts

The Unique Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Refining Your BJJ Game

Training in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) is a lot of fun because there is so much variety to it. There are many different ways in which you can develop your self-defense and fitness program into the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jistu. This variety of BJJ beginnings help create a unique competitive edge as you progress within the art.  For example, depending on how you start BJJ, you may naturally be good at a specific element of it.  Some competitors may become known for their guard, while others will have a fantastic top game.  From there, different styles of practicing the art may arise.  For example, you may prefer grappling with Gi practitioners, or even with no Gi specialists, or you may even join in with all those who just have a talent for the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Every BJJ artist holds a different journey and therefore becomes their own unique BJJ competitor.

Again, there is a lot of choice available to you within the art and you can develop as a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) competitor in many different ways. This is definitely a good thing but there is a drawback that can sneak up on you if you are not careful. That drawback would be falling into the trap of accumulation.

What is accumulation? It is the art of being a technique collector. As the name suggests, being a technique collector refers to learning an enormous amount of moves on a superficial level. Refining the material and learning about the fine points never occurs. The nature of trying to learn something new all the time makes it next to impossible to refine material. Basically, “refining” means performing the same material over and over again to know, and understand it on a deeper level.

Why do so many beginners wish to accumulate so much? It is just the exciting nature of being a beginner. Everyone that starts out in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) wants to see more and more of the art.

There is also a lot of peer pressure that comes from wanting to buy the top new DVDs offering the classic moves of a top BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Certainly, viewing such material is a smart move. However, trying to memorize it in a week and then moving on to new material a week later just simply is not be the best strategy to follow.

Since refinement requires a lot of repetition, many will wonder if it is a boring process. The answer is no because the deeper your understanding grows of the art, you will find the deeper the power grows within your take downs and submissions.  You will learn there is always something new to learn about a particular move, and refining that move you will create an entirely new power within yourself. An arm-bar could take a lifetime to study and still only the surface of the art will be scratched.

If you want a little motivation for refining your BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) game, all you need to do is accept the fact that all the top players do this to be at the top. This is why you don’t see sloppy fighters throwing everything at an opponent. Rather, you will see fighters with solid, tight games that are focused and their performances are very controlled and specific. All that comes from refinement. So, refine your BJJ game and become a top fighter!
