Getting To Know Martial Arts

Image

Many are skeptical about martial arts, especially when starting out. They often wonder if martial arts will be too much work or if they will even find it enjoyable, but if you ask anyone who has been doing martial arts a long time, these are common thoughts for one just starting out. The first few drills and training sessions will be the toughest as your body most likely isn’t familiar with the movements or the contact, but that will change. Each time you drill a certain technique, your body gets more and more used to it. Think of your body like a computer; each time you go through a movement or technique, you’re basically just programming your body. The more you do it the more your body becomes comfortable with it. Once you settle in and you become comfortable, that is where the fun begins. This is when you can open your skill set up to as many techniques as you can handle and learn different styles too.

If you’re not one that is comfortable with physical contact, I ensure you that Krav Maga offers nothing that will put you over the edge. After all, Krav Maga is primarily all self defense, so little contact is actually preferred in most scenarios. However, there are a few beginners that have a phobia of physical contact. Luckily for these people, martial arts offers many other styles, like Thai Kickboxing, that is just as much of an exercise as it is a martial art. While Krav Maga specializes in self-defense, thus requiring physical contact, martial arts like Thai Kickboxing is more independent. While there are many styles of Thai Kickboxing, the majority of them can be found enjoyable to the most hesitant people who fear close quarters and physical contact. As you will soon find out, Krav Maga and other martial arts have a huge pay off after that initial hump.

As comfort levels set in, you will find much enjoyment in practicing and learning techniques. You will make friends, learn things about yourself, and develop a strong, confident, mature, and new perception of life through the study of martial arts.

Bully Prevention Calls for Community

 Image

Is your child having trouble with bullies at school?  Dragon Within Martial Arts helps many different kids learn about bullying and how it can be prevented safely and respectfully.  Bullying is most commonly seen as being physical, verbal and always confrontational. Whether it’s kids or adults, face-to-face confrontations are frequently the way bullies go after their victims.   But it’s not the only way. Cyberbullying through internet social networks, texting and cell phones can be just as damaging as physical showdowns.  Bullying will not cease to exist unless kids police themselves and their friends.  Here at Dragon Within we work with children to teach and motivate them to stand up for them selves and others facing a bully.  We show children how to defuse a bully by practicing a variety of self defense methods and movements.  We also conduct monthly “Mat Chats” where we sit together and discuss bullying and how to stop it.  It takes a sincere effort from both children and parents to successfully put an end to bullying.

Parent involvement and communication in their child’s life can also help prevent bullying.  Consistently providing a ride to and from class may be a good time where parents can address issues in school like bullying, and new friendships.  Parental presence should also extend into the digital world where new found “cyber bullying” can take place as well.  This new generation has proven that a iphone or laptop can become a weapon even in the hands of the most innocent-looking children.   The distant communication of the internet provides children with a way to hurt others at no physical risk of danger.  Kids who would never dream of shouting at another student or shaking a fist in someone’s face, can send threatening text messages or start vicious rumors on the Internet about another child.  One solution to cyberbullying could be that as a parent you must have them add you as a friend on Facebook and be permitted to follow them on Twitter and Instagram or they lose the privilege to the sites themselves.  You could also make it mandatory that you know the login information to their social sites.  Some other preventive steps that can avoid bullying can start at home with moms and dads talking to their kids, picking up on their conversations about other children, supervising their use of cell phones making sure that they become neither victims nor perpetrators of cyberbullying.  Some kids might find such intervention an invasion of privacy. Some parents might, too. But it’s like talking to children about drugs and alcohol. If you can save a kid’s life from ruin, your own or someone else’s, interceding is the right thing to do.

In order to stop bullying we have to understand why kids do it.  Some bully because they feel insecure.   At Dragon Within we help our students develop self confidence.  Building self confidence is very important because it strengthens your child’s integrity and self esteem.  These are building blocks to making good decisions outside of school like issues involving bully prevention and peer pressure.  Other kids bully because they simply lack self control and coping mechanisms to deal with anger and frustration.  We demonstrate the importance of being focused and controlled in class so that they may reflect the same self control when faced with a bully outside of class.  The positive social values like self control and self confidence may also be just what your child needs to not become a bully or cyberbully.

At our academy we teach our students that bullying is unacceptable. We help establish rules about bullying and we stick to them.   We also teach kids to treat others with respect and kindness.   Our institution houses a diverse student body and is great for children to learn how to treat all different kinds of people with the same respect and kindness.  In our monthly Mat Chats we discuss with our students, how to identify situations that may lead to bullying so that they can recognize and prevent it from happening.  If your child is being bullied or is getting in trouble at school for bullying, Dragon Within Martial Arts can help.

Change Your Life, Take Martial Arts

Image

There is so much more to gain from Martial Arts classes than you could ever gain from a typical gym. Instead of mindlessly picking things up and putting them down, Martial Arts increases your physical fitness by stimulating your brain and coordination to target, and work muscles. Martial Arts classes will keep your muscles constantly learning new moves which ultimately burns body fat faster than ever.  Our instructors provide the motivation and new self defense tactics to keep your mind active while your body works hard towards your goal weight.  This mind and body combination alleviates stress, and helps provide a mental space for you to vacate your problems and focus on Martial Arts.   The benefits you gain from Martial Arts class could change your life forever.  Plus it looks great on a resume!

Martial Arts is significantly more valuable than a generic gym routine. It looks great on college and career applications.  It provides an organized hobby that directly shows employers and colleges that you are a disciplined, hard working, and dedicated individual.  Employers understand the time and commitment it takes to earn a black belt in Martial Arts.  This hobby also reflects a solid sense of mental wellness, and in the work force today, that is exactly what they are looking for.   The belt progression and ranking systems reflect the amount of time and commitment you have put into the hobby.   By saying that you are a black belt in Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or Thai Kickboxing, essentially you are telling your employers and colleges that you are goal orientated and you can stay focused and committed to working hard to reaching your goals.  Ultimately your belt provides proof that you can put down on paper that you are not mindlessly spending your time goofing off but you are voluntarily learning and even exercising in a productive environment. Colleges and employers really are impressed to see that Art under your Skills or Activities section of your resume or applications.  If you cant get the career you have always wanted,  start by taking Martial Arts for a few months, and then see how you feel about going after that position.

Not happy with your current job or lifestyle? The self confidence you gain from class will allow you to step up to the plate and make those risky decisions it takes to move up in the world.   Martial Arts will bring you to a higher level of awareness and wellness so that you can see the changes in your life you need to make.  The confidence you gain from the classes may provide that boost it takes to make those transitions in life much easier for you to control and manage.  After taking a Martial Arts class you simply know your self better.  Wether you are kicking higher in Thai Kickboxing, or throwing a bigger jab hook combination, the classes show you exactly what you are physically and mentally capable of.  You will be surprised how much you can grow in a single month of taking Martial Arts classes. You become more flexible and as you see the changes in your body; you may then begin to see the changes you need to make in all aspects of your life to continue growing in a productive, happy, and energetic environment.

Your entire life can turn around when you consistently show up to Martial Arts class.  Wether you have a good day or a bad day, by simply showing up to class you are getting that much closer to another belt, and a better body.  The fact that you continue going to class even on days you don’t feel up to it, you are positioning yourself to build character and self discipline.  The good effects Martial Arts has your mental wellness are endless.

If you just can’t stick to a diet or exercise plan, call Dragon Within today.  Our instructors take the time to motivate you to stay committed to reach your goal weight.  If you don’t feel like you are getting the recognition you deserve at your current job, take Martial Arts classes.  The confidence you could gain from Krav Maga classes will make you stand out from the crowd.  The mental efficiency you gain may send you soaring above your fellow coworkers and into that new position you have been working so hard for.  It will give you self discipline it takes to wait for the opportunity.  It will give you the self control it takes to make decision to make the change you really need.  Your life could completely change for the better by consistently coming to Martial Arts class.  From exercising, to learning self defense, you are expanding your mind for greatness.  If you need a change in your life now is the time to start.  Make this year one for the books, and try a class today!

The Unique Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Refining Your BJJ Game

Training in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) is a lot of fun because there is so much variety to it. There are many different ways in which you can develop your self-defense and fitness program into the practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jistu. This variety of BJJ beginnings help create a unique competitive edge as you progress within the art.  For example, depending on how you start BJJ, you may naturally be good at a specific element of it.  Some competitors may become known for their guard, while others will have a fantastic top game.  From there, different styles of practicing the art may arise.  For example, you may prefer grappling with Gi practitioners, or even with no Gi specialists, or you may even join in with all those who just have a talent for the world of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts). Every BJJ artist holds a different journey and therefore becomes their own unique BJJ competitor.

Again, there is a lot of choice available to you within the art and you can develop as a BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) competitor in many different ways. This is definitely a good thing but there is a drawback that can sneak up on you if you are not careful. That drawback would be falling into the trap of accumulation.

What is accumulation? It is the art of being a technique collector. As the name suggests, being a technique collector refers to learning an enormous amount of moves on a superficial level. Refining the material and learning about the fine points never occurs. The nature of trying to learn something new all the time makes it next to impossible to refine material. Basically, “refining” means performing the same material over and over again to know, and understand it on a deeper level.

Why do so many beginners wish to accumulate so much? It is just the exciting nature of being a beginner. Everyone that starts out in BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) wants to see more and more of the art.

There is also a lot of peer pressure that comes from wanting to buy the top new DVDs offering the classic moves of a top BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). Certainly, viewing such material is a smart move. However, trying to memorize it in a week and then moving on to new material a week later just simply is not be the best strategy to follow.

Since refinement requires a lot of repetition, many will wonder if it is a boring process. The answer is no because the deeper your understanding grows of the art, you will find the deeper the power grows within your take downs and submissions.  You will learn there is always something new to learn about a particular move, and refining that move you will create an entirely new power within yourself. An arm-bar could take a lifetime to study and still only the surface of the art will be scratched.

If you want a little motivation for refining your BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) game, all you need to do is accept the fact that all the top players do this to be at the top. This is why you don’t see sloppy fighters throwing everything at an opponent. Rather, you will see fighters with solid, tight games that are focused and their performances are very controlled and specific. All that comes from refinement. So, refine your BJJ game and become a top fighter!

Maximize Physical Fitness, Learn Krav Maga.

The Superior Fitness Program behind Krav Maga Training

Are you getting your money’s worth at your local gym? Chances are you’re doing your cardio and your weights, plus trying some high-tech equipment. You may feel toned and even have a bit of spring in your step. The question is – how fit are you? You might feel a new power, but the reality is superior fitness can be found in the fighting techniques of Krav Maga. Krav Maga will expand your physical range and turn you into a specimen you might not recognize. Find out how much power is contained within this bold fitness-training program.

Train like a World-Class Fighter

The training boxers and wrestlers go through is known as the most physically demanding work for athletes. Martial artists take a similar approach in dedication and vigorous practice. Krav Maga incorporates Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, (BJJ), Boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and Karate; which together, transforms average people into skilled and composed street fighters every single day. From balance and agility to resistance and sheer ferocity, the Krav Maga routine will make you forget about any fitness program you’re following. It is the ultimate training program for self-defense and fitness.

It begins with a sharpening of reflexes and heightening of the senses. Imi Lichtenfeld, inventor of the Krav Maga technique, began practicing this system out of pure necessity. It was either “defend or vanquish” on the streets of pre-WWII Slovakia. Lichtenfeld learned how to disarm assailants coming at him with knives, sticks, clubs and superior numbers. When you train in self-defense on this level, you are engaging in fitness of the highest level.

To withstand an attack of multiple aggressors with weapons, you must be able to slide, dive, block, kick, jump, swing and catapult with abandon. Krav Maga prepares students to take the most comprehensive approach to self-defense. In fact, the idea is to withstand the attack and make sure the aggressor does not have the chance to make a second move. It is self-defense that hits back harder.

Incorporating Fitness Techniques into Warrior-like Presence

Lichtenfeld and his crew in Slovakia had no choice but to become modern warriors when faced with the terror of Nazi gangs. Modern Krav Maga helps you develop your strength, your endurance, your balance and your mental toughness. That is a part of any fitness program. Then you learn how to take it to another level. Krav Maga practitioners do not give up; they do not hesitate; and they do not waiver. If your life is ever challenged, you will know exactly how to respond.

Superior fitness becomes an element of your personality. When you walk down the street, everyone will be able to tell that you are a superior athlete. To challenge a fighter with Krav Maga training, you have to go “all in” or face the wrath of a warrior unleashed. The technique was invented as a means for survival, and it remains a way to learn and practice the fastest and most effective form of self-defense. It also is a way to reach the peak of your physical form. Before you waste another minute in the local gym, try a Krav Maga session and step into your true physical fitness zone.

Why Train Mixed Martial Arts/MMA at DWMMA

Why Mixed Martial Arts?  What are the benefits of MMA/Mixed Martial Arts training and why is it more effective than traditional martial arts?  Success in Mixed Martial Arts/MMA lies in adapting many styles.  While each martial art has its attributes– it has its gaps as well.  By cross training in different arts, as you do with MMA/Mixed Martial Arts, you fill yourself with more knowledge of different self-defense skills that make for a more well-rounded defense system.

Cross training in different arts that compliment each other can be extremely beneficial to the practitioner by making your self-defense techniques more realistic and practical by filling the gaps that you encounter in each art.  This is why Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) is such an effective “fighting style”.  The definition of Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) isn’t the training of particular martial arts, or even necessarily to become a UFC fighter, like our former BJJ Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/MMA Mixed Martial Arts mentor, Kenny “KenFlo” Florian–it’s a combination of many arts such as: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Western Boxing.  Our goal, at Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, is to offer you the most realistic, and functional self-defense training around and with cross training in different martial arts, you will be confident that you will be able to defend yourself in virtually ANY situation.

Getting Over the MMA Gym Stereotype/DWMMA

“I am not the type of person who could do Martial Arts…”

“I am not a fighter; I just want to get in shape…”

“All the people at MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) gyms are muscle-heads who just like to punch things…”

Have you ever thought these things when asked about taking a program at an Mixed Martial Arts gym?  If so, then you are one of MANY people who have been plagued my MMA stereotyping.  Now, I am not saying that ALL Mixed Martial Arts gyms are right for everybody, because some aren’t.  The key is knowing how to choose the correct academy.

When you walk in…take a deep breath.  Look around and get a feel for the atmosphere.  Are the people there friendly?  Are they ALL big muscle heads screaming and punching things?  If they aren’t then take a deep breath out and let yourself relax; unless, of course, that is the kind of place you are looking for.

A lot of martial arts gyms get branded with a bad name because of the stereotypes.  Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, is a place that is nothing like what you probably have heard.  We offer a friend atmosphere and environment where people of any background and fitness level can train.  Our programs we offer such as: Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ), Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) and Children’s Programs, are all taught in a safe, fun and ego-free environment.

Here are some of the testimonials from people who, at one point, thought the same thing about Martial Arts:

I met Dennis in 2002 when he opened Curves for Woman in Salem. I stopped going after a while.

I unexpectedly ran into Dennis in 2006 and was excited to hear that he had opened a new gym called DWMMA. He spoke to me about his Boxing, Thai Kickboxing, MMA, and Self Defense classes that were being offered through his gym. Because of my past experience with Dennis I knew it would be a great workout and excellent opportunity to learn self-defense.

Dennis immediately made me feel comfortable and increased my confidence and motivation level. He pushed me to do my best and always stressed the importance of proper technique. I definitely feel like I have accomplished something for myself by attending DWMMA and my motivation hasn’t wavered. He continuously makes the classes interesting, fun and routines constantly vary. He truly pushes me to believe in myself and to do things that I never thought would be possible. I have been seeing amazing results, increased strength, energy and confidence in myself.

I not only feel better about my physical self but with his help I truly feel better in mind, body, and spirit.

-Ann Blouin

When I started looking at MMA schools to train at it was a little intimidating, as I didn’t know what to expect. What I found at DWMMA was a world-class gym with a staff to match. The students/instructors are all very helpful and make you feel welcomed. It’s an environment where there are no egos. You can challenge yourself while getting a great workout in a safe and friendly environment.

-Jay Sartori

I have been training Thai Kickboxing at DWMMA for a little over two years. I initially signed up because I was bored with the typical workout routines that I was limited to at standard gyms and wanted to try something new and challenging. What I found was a great, intense workout in a fun and supportive environment.

Dennis and the other instructors are great. They really push you to get as much out of each class as possible. At the same breaking down all of the techniques and making sure that you have proper form. They stress the importance of taking drills “alive”, so it’s more than just about memorizing a 15 count or a boxing feed but being able to defend or attack when an opponent is resisting.

Aside from the Thai Kickboxing I also participate in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA classes at DWMMA. I have found that all of the classes really compliment each other and help to make you more well-rounded when it comes to self-defense.

If you are looking for a great workout and a way to get in shape and relieve stress all while learning self-defense techniques at the same time I would highly recommend coming in and checking out a class at DWMMA.

-Keith Doty

Self Defense: Knowledge is Key/ @DWMMA

In a “perfect world”  the best way to defend yourself would be to avoid dangerous situations all together.  Unfortunately, that will only work to a certain point.  It’s almost impossible to avoid risk all together; since dangerous situations can develop with little to no warning and could be from the people whom you would least likely expect.  I know the facts are scary: but they are true.   Knowledge on how to protect you, and your loved ones, in virtually any situation is key to feeling safe-no matter where you go.

When looking for the correct program to learn self-defense; tradition martial arts won’t work as well as combative martial arts.  At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA,  our Filipino Jiu-Jitsu program is our most practical and realistic form of self-defense.  In Filipino Jiu-Jitsu, we teach a reality based self-defense curriculum, incorporating an extensive variety of strikes, low line kicks, joint locks, trapping, clinch fighting, take downs, grappling/ground fighting and weapons training; making it a realistic form of self-defense.  A lot of the concepts are similar to those in Krav Maga, in regards to the realistic and street based form of street self-defense.

Filipino Jiu-Jitsu is well suited for men, and women of all ages, fitness and experience levels because physical strength and athletic abilities are not essential. Only the core techniques have been taken from these combative arts and organized into an easy to learn curriculum that can benefit the beginner as well as the advanced practitioner.

In addition to learning effective self-defense, Filipino Jiu-Jitsu also provides the student with the means to improve their physical fitness, awareness, flexibility and self-confidence. Combining the best of many styles into a blended system gives our students the advantage they need to protect themselves in virtually any situation.

Mixed Martial Arts and It’s Benefits for Women/ at DWMMA

Knowledge of self-defense is important for everybody.  Men, women and children can all benefit from learning how to defend themselves; however, this article is based upon the importance of women learning self-defense.

In a world where women are unrightfully labeled as helpless and weak; we often become the target for acts of violence.  Threatening situations such as: rapes, assaults, muggings etc. result with little to no warning.  We need to find the most REALISTIC self-defense program as possible in order to fully be prepared for these situations.

One of the best ways to learn how to defend yourself is to take martial arts, specifically Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).  MMA isn’t just for people who aspire to become a competitive MMA fighter like you see on UFC. It can be practiced for sport, fun and knowledge of a great, realistic, self-defense system.  A lot of gyms gear their MMA program for fighters.  At Dragon Within Mixed Martial Arts, Salem MA, their unique approach is for anybody looking to learn in a safe, and fun environment.

I know you are probably wondering if Mixed Martial Arts has a place in women’s self-defense training?  The answer, in my opinion, is YES.  Many women have turned to Mixed Martial Arts for self-defense training, while learning the arts of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, Judo, Karate, and Wrestling to make it a well-rounded, but more importantly, realistic self-defense martial art.

Taking Mixed Martial Arts can be beneficial in many aspects of your life.  It is a great way to stay fit, it will boost your confidence, it will give you the knowledge of how to defend yourself in virtually any situation-all the while having fun and learning something new.
